I am thinking of installing an aftermarket sterio in my 96. I am looking for any adivce and possibly any pics anyone has of something installed. I am concerned that it will look weird because the stock one is so big.

Thay make a plate to fill in the void, I kept mine the same cause i wanted all the same color. Most new head units dont come in orange.
Allso the 92 i have its hard to find a face plate for a new head unit.
It would be nice to have a mp3 player but amped and some woofers it sounds good.
Good luck,
Paul

Here's a pic of mine. The stock delco unit was a joke. I was concerned about matching the orange dash lighting also, and found a blaupunkt unit that had adjustable color.

I replaced my Bose with a Alpine 9845 CD/Mp3 player. It cost $180.00 installed. I could not be more pleased. Lights are programable in 4 or 5 colors. I am not fussy but it blows the doors off of the Bose.

Mine is either the 9455 or 9855 Alpine head unit with B&W speakers...absolutely phenominal sound! It was quite a bit more for the install but they did a nice custom "tray" below the headunit that holds about 5 jewel cases.
I really want to use my IPOD in the car but I need to figure out how to put it in there so it looks good. I have a FM transmitter deal already but it leaves the IPOD loose on the console. Anyone have a solution?
I like everything about it except the HU mounting. I used the Metra mount kit with a pocked below the deck, but it doesn't quite fit the space properly. You can't tell, really, unless you are right in there looking at the gaps and stuff. I intend to replace it with a mount and face plate from Vrmm Vrmm like RJ1AZ's.
great write up. I am not sure how much I want or need to do. I like good sound but I am not sure how much $$ I want to put into it. I know I do not want to run the amp behind the seat. As you mention there isn't very much room to start with behind the seat. I am thinking that this is one thing I might leave to a professional (more due to laziness). But then again who knows. I have looked at some alpine and kenwood systems to include the one you used. My fear (or the reality) is that if I change the sterio I need to change the speakers, then I need to change the amp, etc. what begins as a low dollar upgrade quickly turns into a $1000 + adventure. I am not sure I need that much into a sterio system.
Anything you do, be it upgrade/repair the bose or go aftermarket, figure $1000.00 to do it.
Allow me to recommend a system:
Basic CD/MP3 head unit, $250.00
Nice pair of 6.5" 2 way components, $300.00
Nice 2 channel amp, $300.00
Nice 10" sub, with enclosure, $200.00
Mono amp to drive sub, $200.00
Also, if you hit the sales, eBay or something like that, and pick up some older product, that is used, you can have a $5k system for nothing. DIY the install and you will save a bundle.
