my buddy recently purchased (i think) that exact same alpine. he researched a lot and shopped around a lot and found that you can't beat the ipod integration of the alpine decks. they still are far from streamlined but they are the best option out there (well..besides a car pc )
Thanks guys. That was my original impression, but you've been extremely helpful with the other parts of my system build, so I figured I would run this by you as well.
Thanks again!
I'll be sure to create a thread to detail my final build
I am running a Pioneer Premier DEH-P980BT. With the Ipod adapter the h/u will charge and read on the screen the same info as the ipod screen. search playlists and all that stuff.

So I checked out the 780 Pioneer Premier this weekend, and I like the interface and the display, but is the sound quality as good as Alpine's 9857?
I'm going to be running all my speakers off a polk momo amp, so I'm just worried about SQ and pre-outs, not necessarily deck power.
The one I was specifically looking at was the 780 because it is in comparison price wise with the 9857 Alpine I was looking at. I'm not sure if the SQ varies that much between the Pioneer Premiers...
Well after listening to both and playing with the controls and iPod functionality I went with the Alpine 9857.
The Pioneer's "Rotary Commander" was pretty cool and useful, but I foung myself accidentally actuating the wrong axis when i tried to do stuff with it. I figure if I couldn't operate it perfectally while standing still I didn't stand a chance while driving down the road
Thanks again for everybody's help!!!!
Look for my thread about my install in the coming months. Alpine 9857 and my iPod sending tunes to a Polk Momo C400.4 powering a pair of Polk Momo MMC 6500s and a 10" JL in a center cubby box.
I do agree with the controls being a little nicer on the alpine... you will have one nice install that amp is a beast, but you guys have prly heard me say it 1000x times there arent many amps id give up the polk for, and hell i got it for cost
