My speakers or amps are shot but I dont have the money for a new HU yet. Can I use some real good speakers, amp, and maybe a small sub w/ amp with the stock HU?
You can't use the stock unit without a converter that would cost almost as much as a head unit anyway. What are you looking to spend to get the system going? Do you want to add to it later? What kind of unit do you want? CD, CD changer, Tape Deck, all the above?

I want to spend about 200 right now just so I can listen to some music. Later though, I want a new HU that plays CD-Rs with some really good speakers and maybe a small sub. If there is a 6-12 cd changer that plays CD-Rs, I would like that. The stoc is a BOSE cd player.
$200 is tough. This is roughly the minimum cost for most components: Head unit, amp, or speakers, for good stuff. You could get something now that would give you sound but with this low an initial budget you wouldn't want to keep it as you add to your system. Let me look and see what I can come up with. :smash: :flag

Here is a good deck for 200$ It does all that you were looking for and would be fully upgradeable. http://www.soundcityoutlet.com/bin/p...product_id=152
Here's a pair of speakers you can use for $60. They can be mounted in the rear. Later, you can get some really good ones for the front and a sub and they can be the filler speakers for the rear. I would upgrade this system using these components next with a 4 channel amp and front speakers, then with a second amp and a sub, and lastly with the changer. Figure about 200$ +/- $50 per component.
You will also need a good kit if you do not feel comfortable fabricating one yourself. You will also need a plug if you don't feel comfortable testing and splicing into the wires. Kits usually run about $20 and wire harnesses 10-15$. You'll need crimps and a crimping tool and a soldering iron. Get blue butt crimps and a crimper that has a cup for the crimp on one side and what looks like a tooth on the other. Works much better than the ones with two cups that just pinch the crimp.
Hope this helps

The problem with that is the speakers in a vette, unlike just about any other car, are integrated into their own amp. You can't just replace a speaker because if you do, you are removing the speakers power source. Without that, the speakers would just sit there. You need to either waste the money getting a poor outdated Bose system replacement part for a few hundred or replace the speaker and add a power source, the cheapest of which is a powered deck. Sorry man. :nonod:
I have very little info on the C4 HU and system. If I was sent an HU that at least the radio worked, a system wiring diagram and a good/bad amplified speaker, I will check it all out and do a write up on doing mods to the system. It may be possible to use a the C4 HU with aftermarket amps and speakers without buying an expensive level converter.
I realize there are a number of different C4 HU's, but lets keep this experiment limited to a 90's HU for now.
I asked for C5 components about a year ago, and the good people on the forum sent me all the various Bose components to reverse engineer and help develop my postings. I even bought a BCM so that I could bench test the C5 HU out of the car. The C5 HU will not power up out of the car without a BCM connected to it.
