A buddy of mine got a chance to hear my new stereo system and has decided to do his car for Christmas.
He wanted to know why I didnt put 6 x 9's in my doors. We both thought they would fit. I told him no one ever sugested 6 x 9's in all the research I did.
So why not 6 x 9's ?
Hey I just noticed I am not a Junior Member any more.
6X9's generally sound like crap, especially when you add power they distort way to easily. If you look at any quality components set you wont see a 6X9 size available.
If you already have a good set of 6 x 9's then I would use them. Put some power on them, and some dynamat in the doors. Should sound good. If you are still looking to purchase, I would go with 6 1/2" components or if you really want to get serious, a 3-way setup with an 8" midbass, 4" midrange, and a 1" soft dome tweeter.
oh, BTW, Some mfg still make good quality 6 x 9, JL Audio, JBL to name a couple
He was planning to do hu, speakers, amp for speakers first then come back and do sub and amp for sub later. He was thinking the 6x9 would give him more base than 6 1/2s.
they will give a littel more bass but its minimal, they actually might be tight fitting in the doors without modding. I would recommend deadening the door and a qulity 6.5 component set ran off an amp. Maybe get a 4 channel amp so he can use the rear channels to power a sub at a later time. I wouldnt even bother with rear speakers in a vette
Sound deadening is one of the single best things you can do for your system and its response outside of a proper tune and at least decent quality components.
Anyone that cares about accuracy and sound quality in their rides I guarantee has sound deadening. (and is willing to make SOME effort heh)
PS I had a long post about 6x9's a while back, but basically in todays cars there are so many better options available from a driver standpoint that to use them is to make compromises in your systems response. Easily distort, muddy in the midrange, inefficient cone shape and poor output vs their size.
I used EDEAD V1SE2 basically for everything from edesginaudio.com they have good quality stuff. We also get a forum discount if you call and say you are a corvetteforum memeber and ask about discount
