Here are some pics of my attempt at doing the double DIN mod to the radio bezel on my 98. The molding, filling, and sanding is all done, and now it's off to Leather Magic for refinished to the stock textured look.
I'd like to thank Scott FX, LV 2 XLR8, and RCS128 for all the help and guideance. They paved the way for all of us who follow!
I plan on putting an engine spec plate on the flat area where the ash tray door used to be, a mini-jack to hook up an iPod or MP3 player and maybe a mute switch. I'll be installing an AVIC D2 with a Soundgate for now, but in the future I'll probably upgrade to a new amp and component speakers. I'll post some pictures of how it comes out when I'm finished with it.
Yep - Leather Magic. Not what you might think, but a place in North Carolina that manufactures leather repair products for sale to others, and also offers a repair service that they do themselves. Credit for this one goes to Scott FX - he's the one that told me about it.
From what I've been told, they can restore a modded bezel to "so close to factory" that you cannot tell the difference, and they charge about $70 to do it. They quote a 2 week turn around, and I'll let you know how it comes out when I get mine back from them.
where did you get that ABS sludge from? I'm doing a similar project, but i'm trying to mold the door to the ash tray to fit the display of my alpine ERA G320. do you think this stuff will work?
