Came across this blog posting today that addresses the question posed in the subject and as it's one that's been asked here quite a few times I thought I'd share it. Many people are just floored by the fact that there are those of us who are crazy enough to tear our expensive cars apart just to upgrade the stereo. I think this does a fair job of summing up the whys.
I never considered the way Bose were marketed, in reference to them being separate. Then again, I don't shop Bose, so why should I care!
However, the little display islands are interesting, to say the least... think about it for a second, with all the frequency goofing, they put the speakers SO close together, it masks the problem. It won't be noticed - if at all - until the system is put into a room.
I played the Titanic theme CD for a friend on a Bose home system... after playing it on my car system... the Bose could not come close to the lows that my car system could. There is no excuse for a $3000 home theater system to get beat by a $2000 car system. None whatsoever.

I bought an Bose Acoustic Wave CD player a few years ago (when they were first introduced) and I love it for what it was... an attractive and expensive all-in-one CD player/radio for the kitchen.
Worked for me perfectly - and - I sold it for more than half what I paid for it 5 years later. Bose keep their value, no matter what other shortcomings they possess.
My daughter has the Bose wave radio. It is the one Bose product that I think sounds decent. However it is way overpriced. The radio and CD unit sells for $500. Sharper image sells a similar unit for $100. At the very most the Bose radio should sell for $150 - $200. The extra $300 goes to marketing and a substantial profit.

My dad has a wave radio and as England Green said, for what it is it sounds pretty good. But definitely overpriced(he's impossible to buy gifts for, he wanted one, I wasn't gonna argue!).
If you throw enough stuff at the wall, something's eventually gonna stick, blind squirrel and an acorn...

The Acoustic Wave I bought in 2000 was $1100.... and in 2006, it still is
