When I bought the car I knew the stereo was not working, and now I am trying to figure out what is causing it. When you turn it on, you just get a high pitch noise out of all speakers and with the engine off you might be able to hear the music in the backround with the volume cranked.
What do u think this is? Did the HU go or is the ground wire bad?
Could be either. Could also be bad amps, etc. Easiest way to find out is to first check the fuses. There are two locations: the side panel inside the passenger door and behind the panel under the dash on the passenger side. This second needs to be removed by a 7mm to gain access. If the fuses are in order, check the grounds. Open her up and use a meter to check the ground on the head unit. If this doesn't work, install a new system. Its worth it and for the amount you 'll spend fixing it so you have a 10 year old system that was poor 10 years ago you could have a good system today.

Dam skippy. I would test the fuses first. I had two blown in mine. I'm not sure how. They must have been blown when the previous owner was up to no good. If you need assistance taking the center apart let us know. The panel under the dash has three screws: two underneath and a third inside the side passenger fuse area. You'll see a torx screw near the bottom of the housing. Its a real pain in the tail. The radio fuses underneath I think are 10 amp-Red. If the fuses are good, try grounding the unit. Attacg a wire from the battery ground to the metal of the rear of the unit while its hooked up. Also, try unplugging the antenna. If none of these works, you gotta replace/repair stuff so you might as well start the upgrade process.

ok, so I checked the fuses they are all good. Then I spoke to some people in a car audio store. They say I have to replace the entire system, I cant do this piece by piece to start with?
The first thing you need to decide is how far you want to go before you buy anything. Will you be satisfied with decent sound from 4 speakers and a cd or do you want a changer, video, sub, etc. If you answer this question in the first response, you can get away with a deck and a pair of speakers to start off with. If you want more, you may want to go with a deck, amp and a better set of speakers and work from there. Figure a good deck is about $300 and up depending on what you want. The lower speaker sets are $125, and the higher $300-$500. Amps work out to about 100-200 per speaker powered for good power. Adding bass is usually about $800-1000 with parts and labor(Sub, box, amp, wire, installation). Video is another $1000-$1500 to watch DVDs and play on a Playstation 2. Changers are another $200-300. It goes up from there. I got my stuff cheap from my old boss where I installed while in college. Its about a $3,500 system if you include installation. Paid under $1200 for it. What are you looking for?

well in my last car I had a $10k+ 2200+ watt system w/ DVD and such. I no longer want that I am more into performance.
So I was thinking possibly a good alpine or eclipse HU and some speakers (not sure what kind yet) But I am not looking to spend to much money I this system.
But I do have to replace everything then. I cant just replace the HU then a couple months down the road do the speakers.
In the C4, the Blose system has the speakers integrated with the amps. If you replace the head unit, you'll need to buy an expensive adapter to make it work with the system. If you replace the speakers, they won't have any power. Minimum is a set of speakers and a deck. Personally, I would go with a set of seperates in the front with an amp. Then in the back, I'd go with 6x9 or a sub and seperates. With a convertable you'll want the extra power at highway speeds. I'd get the front seperates, a good 4 channel amp, and a deck to start with. You'll want the 4 channel so you can power the rear when you decide to add them and a single 4 channel is more cost effective and smaller than two 2 channel amps. Deck, $300, amp $400, speakers $300+. Just my two cents but remember its your dime. Alpine is good and don't forget Pioneer. Their 7300 is about $300, has everything including a remote, and should sound very good.

The bare minimum system I would go with is that Pioneer deck $300, a pair of Boston Acoustic coax in the front $125, a pair of Boston Acoustic 6x9 rear $200, and an A/D/S power plate 450amp, 50wx4 $375. It will sound good with the top down but will lack the ability to increase the power, give you strong bass, and the tweeters will be near your feet so the sterio imaging will not be so hot. To fix any one of these things would mean changing a component. Up the power = better speakers, bass = replace the 6x9 with seperates or 6 1/2 coax, and tweeters means replacing the front speakers with seperates.

I still have 3 of my amps from my old system so I will probably use the RF 400X4 for the interior speakers, but my other amps r pretty big so I will probably just sell them as I have no use for them
Triple is right on track with the pioneer deck but I would also look at kenwood 6x9's. Great speakers and not gonna empty yoour wallet. Pioneer makes a supertuner that is a exact fit for GM's, this is a very good deck for the $$$, all the options you will every need and quality sound.
Hey, If you got the amps, you'll only need the seperates and the deck. You could go with front first and decide on how you want to do the back later. I have 3 amps, a 12 inch sub, and seperates in the rear. Just fits with the roof down. My concern is that it won't fit when I upgrade to a glass roof so I may have to rebuild it again when the time comes. Do you still have the Video player kickin' around?
