The Stealthbox is about $500, depending on where you go. To make one, you need decent skills with fiberglass as well as wood. Local shops who do fiberglass should be able to make one for under the $500 of the Stealthbox also.
You need to either use expanding 2-part foam or fiberglass to make a mold of the center compartment. If you use fiberglass direct, apply wax thickly to the compartment to prevent sticking.
Cut a piece of MDF to the size of the opening, with a snug fit. Cut out a speaker hole leaving about 1 inch of speaker rim clearance from the rear edge of the compartment. Go down through the hold and build up the glass with mat. Get it about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, layer it in the top edges/corners so it extends onto the top MDF piece, it'll then secure it.
In short, that's about all there is. I don't have time at the moment for the detailed writeup, sorry.
Just like Sam said except, I've found it to be just as easy to use aluminum foil to mask off and form to area. Just as good as wax paper, will hold conformed shape in area, and just peels off afterward.
If your doing it yourself you can make a completely wood enclosure the easiest way by not protruding into the lower portion of the center well. This method would be good for a single 10" or 12" speaker. Good luck.
HEY wait a minute. Your from Springfield! Go to Audiophile on the North Kearney(I think thats the street) in town. Ask for Geoff, If he's in tell him Joe Grier sent you, and see what he can do for you.
Just installed my Stealthbox and I am amazed. This thing hits like two 12s. Highly recommended. I had a CD sitting on the pass. seat and this thing bounced the CD onto the floor it was hitting so hard. Unbelievable and clean.
