Well almost. It's pretty much done. Just have to tie up some loose ends. I have to buy another set of cathodes. The ones I have don't reach across the plexi. I don't know if I can extend the cables coming from the transformer to the cathodes. Anybody know if that's ok to do? Also My plexi window didn't come out like I wanted it to. I made the opening a tad too big. But not bad overall as my first time. Finished carpeting everything. What I've noticed is that mdf on the edge especially where you've made cuts, will absorb the fabric glue like crazy. I used more glue on the top than I did on the bottom part. Maybe because there were less edges on the bottom and some of the edges were painted on the bottom as well. Who knows. Anyway, onto the pics.
As you can see i need one more set of lights, or be able to extend one of the cathode wires to bring it to the other side. I'm just glad it's done. If you guys have any questions, let me know
althought the opening is a lil big it still looks really good dave, just get another set of cathodes for the other end, extending the wires will make one dimmer then the other most likely... im envious
i have to deaden my doors more. They are starting to rattle, haha. The fans work great. you can feel air being sucked in from the side vents. I just finished up covering all the wiring with wire loom. I'm going to order up another set of those cathodes. I've got the fans wired to turn on whenever the amp turns on and if I should forget to turn off the lights to the box, those will turn off when the amp does.
Oh Greg, Just installed that ipod aux input. Works great. Sounds SOOOO much better than going out the headphone jack. I also took those measurements for the openings.
I second the suggestion for a second set of cathodes, or you could get a pair of 12" (one for each side) and use the little 4" elsewhere.
For security reasons, i'd suggest cutting another piece of plexi the same size as the opening, spraying it black and using it to cover the opening when you're parked.
Thanks radio. Thats a great idea on the plexi cover. I was going to try and make one out of mdf and cover it in carpet, but your idea is a lot easier. Still have to make some kind of extension piece to keep my partition and secure it with velcro or something. I had a scare last night. Greg was helping me troubleshoot. I was getting fading in and out of my front speakers and the bass was none existent. Ended up being that my rear ch/sub terminals were making contact at the amp connection. Dumb me. I had the dash apart testing rcas and what not. luckily it was an easy fix. Still have to do some tunning but its all good. Thanks for all your help guys. I think I'm gonna go with a slightly thicker plexi next time.
I may just do the 12" cathodes too. and thrown the 4" somewhere else like you suggested. They are dirt cheap from oznium.
Thanks for the kind words guys. As always comments are always welcome, whether good or bad. They will come in handy when the time comes for a new one.
The amp sounds great J. Leaps and bounds better than the PG amp I had. I found that I have to deaden my doors some more and maybe go with a thicker speaker plate to get rid of some rattles. Im getting a buzzing rattle type noise from the doors that I have to chase down.
I think for the window cover, Im just going to cut the plexi like you suggested, but cover the plexi with carpet. Would that work? As far as the glue working on plexi.
the plexi can be glued on. For windows, i reccomend cutting the plexi about 0.5-1.0 inches larger than the opening and using either screws or double back "uber" tape.
I've got the window screwed in now, thinking about redoing it though. There are a couple scratches in the window too. I want to get the plexi etched which would nice, but im not too sure on how to go about doing that. What I was thinking was maybe using the c5z06 cluster gauge design and etching that into the plexi. the Z06 logo with the checkered flag design behind it

If you're using 1/8" plexi, the best way i've found to etch it is with an engraver. Take the image you want etched, reflect it horizontally, then trace it onto the plexi with the engraver. Flip it back over and you've got a nice clean image. This will also make a neat effect with cathodes.
