I HATE driving anywhere without my iPod. I have gotten so used to not listening to commercials and being able to choose anything from my library rather than being forced to listen to whatever the DJ wants (which in my area means that I will listen to some crusty Beastie Boys song once an hour.)
Having said that, I have found that I really like Podcasts. If you don't know what they are, check iTunes for more information. Think TiVo for talk radio.
Until now, I have not been able to find a deck that recognized Podcasts natively. I was excited when the Alpine Full-Speed interface was introduced, only to be terribly disappointed.
Pioneer has now introduced a unit that controls the iPod flawlessly. All the controls that you are used to on your iPod are now available on the head unit. The one you are looking for is the DEH-6900UB. I bought mine at Circuit City for $279 but they are available from Crutchfield for $249 (last time I checked) with free shipping and install hardware. I will be ordering another one from Crutchfield for my truck when it gets out of the shop (2004 Dodge Ram Diesel...transfer case exploded.)
Bottom line, I am amazed by this unit. I sat in the car playing with it for 2 hours this evening. I have been disappointed by Pioneer interfaces in the past and this one is a huge improvement. I found the deck easy to use and controls logical once I read the directions to find the hidden features (press and hold button for menu...)
Please feel free to ask any questions. I hope this unit sells like wildfire so that Pioneer will be rewarded for doing what all the other manufacturers chose not to.
I just bought a pair of the Pioneer's that you are talking about. There are two models, the 6900 and the Premier line 690. The Premiers were invented to sell only in high end stores. Since I have two C5's to feed, (his and hers) I really price shop. The Premier is the same as the 6900, except it has a two year warranty on it. the 6900 has a one year.
The 690's I've bought came with a free install kit (face plate) and wiring kit, that is useless since I've used the Soundgate adapter.
Anyway since I'm a miser, I found the 6900 for 199.00, you do pay shipping, and you also need to order an antenna adapter, 4.99.
The 690's I've bought were 229.00. With the antenna adapter and shipping I think they were about 245.00
Tomorrow is my install day, got to get one of them in for the ride to the C5-C6 bash this weekend. David
I just picked this model up a week ago from millionbuy $200.00. I happen to like pioneer car audio head units, they are just about bullet proof.
When I went shopping for a HU I wanted ipod controll thru the deck and
3 sets of 4v preouts this unit had it all at a very nice price.
I hope to start my install this weekend. I will post when I get it all done,
Pioneer DEH P6900UB, MB Quart PCE 216 componet F and R , a 12" Rockford sub, and two rockford amps a P400.4 and a P325.2

What are you so terribly disappointed about concerning the Alpine interface? It works flawlessly for me on two completely different Alpine decks. (W-200 & 9857)
I have a DEHP-980BT w/Ipod interface and absolutely love it. Mater of fact my whole system is Pioneer Premier and it sounds awsome. Fosgate, Kicker, Pyle, Zapco, M&M, Alpine and Polk just to name a few.

The biggest problem that I have is that it does not recognize podcasts. The other problem I have is with searching. The Alpine will not let you scroll quickly through tracks. The pioneer interface works like the one on the iPod and allows acceleration. The faster you turn the ****, the faster it goes through the tracks.

You do realize that it allows you to jump ahead in the track listing, or any listing by pushing the preset number buttons. Therefore you dont need to speed through the lists. Just a thought!

Pushing the button will move you ahead in the track listing but if your playlist is not in Alpha, how will you know if you went too far?
This one lets me scroll through at speed and see the names as I scroll.
Having used both, this is an improvement over the Alpine.
First off if you are going to spend the money on a different head unit, pony up for an upgrade to the speakers. The BLOSE speakers absolutely suck. I do believe to answer your question, there is an aftermarket harness that you can buy that will allow you to keep the BLOSE speakers.
