I am starting to become extremely frustrated in my search for a replacement HU for my C5. I was looking into the JVC units with the 3.5" TFT color screens which are single DIN. I like the units but I despise the look of the filler plates used for the install, they look cheap. I've seen the custom ones and they are better but I still don't "love" them.
Does anyone have a 1.5 DIN multimedia screen install they can show me some pics of? Is there any such animal as a direct replacement size HU w/ a color screen? I also don't like the look of the flip up units as they cover the AC vents and you still see the filler plates when the screen is down.
Chevy Guy, Im in the same boat as you. In fact, Ive been looking pretty hard at the JVC units as well (KD-AVX33 or the KD-NX5000[great price at newegg.com]). But im trying to figure out something for the filler. Id like to see if one of the filler kits can be recovered to match the rest of the consol, with the leather like look instead of cheap plastic. I have a Z so I considered the idea of putting a Z badge (just like the fender badge) on there to fill the gap, but still im not sure. Ive searched and the only 1.5 DIN units I found look cheap and are short on features. But im really picky too! It has to have sat radio (sirius), mp3, HD or USB, has to be black (to match the interior), and highly prefer blue lighting on the buttons (again to match the interior...im doing the blue LED mod).
If you find any solutions please share! Im going nuts over this
Cletus, I was under the impression that much more was required to make a DD unti fit. Did you have to modify the mouting rails behind the consol any? Can you post some details on what you did and maybe some pics?
I'll try and get some close-ups. The side fill pieces are high gloss black just like the D3 and maybe a half inch on each side.
The mounting brackets were drilled out and bolted back in like a quarter inch lower. That gave just enough space for the D3 and still left the heating controls in the same place.
