Default Seeking perfect front staging in a C5

Given the location of the speaker mounts in a stock C5, most of the sound comes from my legs. (even with my custom angled speaker mounts)

I've seen members mount tweeters in the door pulls and A pillars, but i'm curious if anyone has re-located their midrange to a higher location and how they did it.

Yes and no.

One of the locations I played with was the dash for my mids. Since they are self contained dome mids I have a lot of freedom with location tests.

The system sounded REALLY raspy with them there, and the stage was very confused (domes have wide dispersion.)

I ended up leaving them in the doors, and playing with tweeter locations.

With the tweeters in the A-pillar, pretty much everything but midbass is just slightly higher than dash level.

In fact, female voices and many male voices actually rise above the midline of the stage, which is nice. Of course different drivers will act differently!

With some time alignment, the stage in my C5 with a-pillar mounts is very good.

I think the issue you will run into if you try to put mids up high is reflections.

Now one very important thing to do with a-pillar mounts is to check your path length differences.

IE, measure distance from right mid to ear. Lets say its 48", then you should pick a spot as close to 48" away on the a-pillar as possible. As long as you do this, you will have, mho, no ill effects from having the tweeter a foot or two from the mid.

Read this thread through ... interesting read and a lot of fact vs "I read this somewhere so it is gospel"

Perfect staging in a vette? Put mids and tweets in the A pillars with custom pods and reshape the entire dash and I bet it is possible

Car audio is all about compromise ... if you really want all out perfection in stage/image/tonality I honestly do not think that the vette is the right platform to start from. Too low, too much console area, too large and curved a dash ... just my 2c.

For those of you who've had your entire dash off? How much room is there for speakers under there if i were to decide to re-mold it?

Actuuuually, CDT makes a small 2.5" cone tweeter that has ultra low extension. I wonder how this would work.

here we go

I wonder about using those for mid duty... probably higher than normal, like 1k. I think 1k is about where 'vertical' location starts to become important.
