I talked with da guys at Car Toys and they say it is impossible to put a MP3 head-unit in my '99 C5 due to the Bose system already wired in it. They said I'd have to have all the system (speakers, wires, headunit, amps, etc) removed and totally redone. They said the ONLY way to get MP3 capabilities is to get an MP3 changer installed and have it routed through the am/fm antenna. Is this correct? I currently have a 12disc cd changer with a bose cassette head-unit. I'd probably be willing to loose the cd changer and definately the cassette player for a simple mp3 head-unit that works with CDRW media.
there exists an adaptor that will sit between your non-bose head unit and the bose external amplifiers/speakers. for the life of me i could not remember the name of it (i think it started with an "A").
most people on this board will tell you to rip out the whole system and replace it. personally, i have not heard a system with that adaptor myself, so i can't say. however, i did just spend over a week ripping out my bose system from my 92 to a sony MP450X and polk components for the fun of it. didn't want to spend money on something i may regret (i.e. the adaptor). i'm pretty happy with the new stuff but then again i'm not as an "audiophile" as most of the people that normally contribute to this section so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.
good luck on finding a good MP3 player. there are not that many choices like with cd/cd changers. i only got mine because it is the only one i found that has a rotary volume control.
by the way, while my sony is decent, the mp3's play with the first split-second missing every track. (about a beat worth.) i got used to it and don't notice it much anymore. too busy driving fast anyway.
No thats not entirely true. The rear speakers and the fronts twidlersi n the door are ran off the deck power amp and will work with the aftermarket head unit. I know I've ran my car that way for over a month before I finished all the seperate amps. The front sub woofers are the ones with a seperate amp. What I would do is take them out and replace them with a nice 6 1/2 speakers that you can afford and wire them to the twiddlers. You will then have a mp3 system at a low price. Not the best sounding one but it will be as good as the stock system + mp3
I will agree with Wicked C5 since we have similar installs except he has the Mp3 player and it sounds fantastic. He has clean bass and good trebles. The remote control is nice too.
