Default Subwoofer selection advice... leaning towards kicker

Cost is a factor since I don't want a $500-1000 sub in my Vette. I like bass but not that much . I would like an ED sub but they are a bit too pricy for my likes.

I am currently leaning towards a 12" Kicker L7 unless someone can tell me otherwise.

I will use a Kicker ZR1000 amp (500rms watts at 2 ohms) left over from my other system that included 3 10" Kicker L7s. obviously they weren't in the Vette. I am trying to go with a stealthy look.

I have the coupe and the amp mounts PERFECTLY between the tail lights (on the inside of course). So I got that portion figured out already.

I just want really clean bass without being obnoxiously loud.

Stealth as in being able to put a cover over the enclosure? If that does not matter the L7 I think works, but we are limited somewhat by the mounting depth and diameter of the magnet. You need to check that out since you have the sub already. Talk to dave at corvettecaraudio.com or NVTHIS here on the forums about the enclosure. 500w to the bass in a vette will have pretty solid ouput and certainly enough for "SQ".

Checked out the mounting depth... 6 7/16 inches... for the 12" L7

7 inches maximum depth... for the box.

Also I rarely turn up my system... but it does happen about 1x a month. Would I be ok with running a 8 gauge wire instead of 4 gauge.

I usually run 4 gauge, and with 500 watts rms or so which is what I am going to power my sub with, I would need 4, but I hate how thick the wire is and as stated earlier I rarely turn it up. Suggestions?

Don't skimp on the power wire IMO. Is it ok? Likely it would be ok. But 500w RMS is a fair amount of drain and you would be better off with the 4 gauge. Get a distribution block and run the 4 gauge to it and then a short length of the 8 gauge to the amp.

Well I am really not trying to save money here. I just think 4 gauge may be overkill during my application. Also it would be much more of a pain to draw through the "firewall" as well as the entire car.

Also the amp has some kind of "funny" wire inputs, I had to cut 1/4 of the last 4 gauge to make it fit.

It is always better to be safe than sorry though.

Check the faq .. wd40 up your 4 gauge for the run through the fire wall and there is a grommet that it will slide right through into the passenger side footwell area. 4 gauge is easy to get through ... 1/0 would be a challenge.

0 isn't that bad

I suggest Windex over wd40 though. It evaporates fast, but leaves no residue or odor

4 gauge is good for about 1200 watts (class a) power, so I'd go with that. Oxygen free copper. NOT a hybrid like copper clad aluminum.

IMO the ED subs are much cleaner then the kickers and they cant be that much more money. 500rms you could get away with 8ga but just run the 4ga its so easy in the vette anyways

I am actually now looking for a 10" instead of 12. So JL audio W7 is myfavorite... too bad they are very pricy.

Trust Pentavolvo on this one. Here is the link to the sub he told me to get for the install he did on my car. It is worth every penny, even if you dont want to much bass. The mounting depth is great for a stealth box as well.

Years ago I had Kicker and I wasn't impressed. They may make better models now; I prefer Alpine and have heard good stuff about JL.

This is a great looking set-up but I won't be able to fit a 13" woofer in my box. It is made for a 10" and I don't want to cut it.
