Default XM Radio

Who has got it?
Do you like it?
Have you hacked it yet?
Is it worth it?
Does the glass mount antenna look good (good enough to sit on my C5?)

Thanks gentlemen!

I've got mine on order since the national roll out isn't till November 15th.
Getting the terk SR1 antenna, looks like a small mouse (less noticeable)
Hacked, somebody will eventually
And the way radio stations are around portland. The only decent thing on is Howard Stern.

Check out http://www.xmradio.com to look at all the gear.

Jeff,

Thanks for your help! I've decided against it at this time.

The damn stores here can't even get the SR-1 antenna in and that's the ONLY way I'd buy this...

I've decided I'm going to hold out for a head unit that has the following features..
1. XM ready
2. CD player
3. MP3 capable
4. GPS built in
5. preferrably a 7 inch retractable screen that SUPPORTS HD feed!

I'm going to use external amps so all it needs is pre-amp outs..

When someone offers this unit at a fair price, I'll buy. Until then - I feel the technology hasn't matured enough to warrant me spending a grand!

The company that has the closest to that is alpine. ALpine CVA-1003

It lacks the MP3 capability. i don't think you'll see one with the MP3 for another 2 years at the most.

i have it and love it. i live north san diego and the hills made my reception on my stock c5 suck. the xm is super and it sounds like my cd. i purchased the pioneer fm modulator. the $10 fee is well worth it. the diplay unit sits right in the the spot where the ash tray would occupy and you can still put down the cover. and the modulator was mounted behind the passegners seat.

Jeff,

It would appear the the Alpine CVA-1003 doesn't support HD resolution :(
And it only has ONE pre-Out?? What up with THAT?

It's the low end entry level display for Alpine. Alot of people couldn't afford the 1100 plus for the cva-1006 or IVA-100?

Not sure if it was Ainet compatable, but that would be the way to go on one of those units, then you just use the pre outs from the EQ brain.

I'm afraid I'm not quite as adept as you are here? What are you suggesting?

I found two pioneer models and the HIGH END model seems to have what I want minus the XM compatibility but the LOW END HAS CM COMPATIBILITY! WTF?? :)

jeffvette, Alpine 7878 has MP3, XM, etc. Came out last month for under $700. Couple that with a dvd/video screen and you're good to go. Has all the options you are talking about. See http://www.mmxpress.com like I said in my other post. Here is the direct link to the unit. http://www.mmxpress.com/alpine/alpine_cda-7878.htm

I know about the 7878. I'm currently waiting for mine to come in. But if you look at what he wants in one unit, it isn't going to happen. He's got a C5, and the headunit I don't think is a double din like the c4 is.

Ed, check ebay. Most shops do not have them in stock and only have them special ordered. I've seen about a dozen on there so far.

Jeff,

You really know your schitt! Thanks! :) You've helped me greatly!

OK, I've decided to get:
1. A JL Stealthbox
2. One amp for the JL stealth box (at least 300 watts RMS)
3. 5.5's for the back OEM location (still unsure on brand but leaning toward polk because that's what CC has at a fair price!
4. 6 1/4 components for the front (Isn't this the right size? Any brand reccomendations or mounting tips? Leave the tweets in the door kickpanels?)
5. A four channel amp to drive the front components (At least 70 watts per channel, RMS - Any brand reccomendations?
6. XM satty radio of some kind.. (can't go buy a pioneer becuase it won't interconnect with the Alpine 7878..)
7. The Alpine CDA-7878 (IF I can figure out a way to keep this thing from looking ghetto when I do the install since I've got a 1.5 DIN and it's only a 1" din. I saw where someone here had a chrome looking plate around it and it looked GREAT! Unfortunately I can't remember who it was nor do I know where to get the materials to do this myself! SO I may be forced to find a different <one that's a 1.5 DIN> HU! :( )

Basicaly I don't know what brand of speakers to get and I can't seem to make a decision on an amp. The circus city guy <kid> says MTX is the only way to go because it's "more digital." I fail to see where this lends to better sound because you're amplifying an analog input, not digital...?

Is the Alpine V series a good amp? The largest one they had only sported 45 watts per channel... That isn't going to be enough to keep the 5.5's and components from clipping when I CRANK it, is it? Damm. SO many decisions and I don't know anything about this stuff like I used to 8 years ago!

HELP?!??!!
:D

OK, trying to workout my budget here...

1. Alpine CDA-7878 HU - $599 (shipped to my door!)
2. Polk 5.5's (tweet and mid) - $99 (@ Circus city )
3. Polk (db or dx series- I can't remember what the box said..) - $240 (@ circus city)
4. Amp to drive numbers '2' and '3' ~$300.
5. Amp to drive sub ~$330
6. JL stealthbox ~$579
7. Alpine XM unit <with antenna> $369.

That totals `$2500. That is JUST over what I had planned. About $500 over :(

I need to find some good deals on amps and a good deal on a stealth box and that might allow me to build my system the way I want to. Anyone see any areas I may have missed?

http://www.soundcityoutlet.com/bin/p...?product_id=15
Rockford Fosgate 75x4 amp for $269
http://www.mmxpress.com/punchamp_closeout.htm
Rockford fosgate G250.2 250W amp for sub, $214

That saves you $115
Can't help you on the stealth box. $579 seems a bit steep for what you get though.
