[C6 Nav/Bose] MP3 File Name Limit?

So I did some testing tonight. Out of 77 MP3 files on the CD, 9 did not show up on the list and could not be played. All had filenames of 26 characters or more (not counting the ".mp3" extension). All of the other songs on the CD had file names shorter than that.
Is there a way around this? I don't want to have to go in and rename hundreds of files (not to mention having to shut off iTune's automatic file organization, which I like).
Bad enough I can't find an elegant iPod solution, but now it won't even play all of my MP3's!! WTF???!!!
I'd appreciate any input...

- The unit only supports ID3 tag version 1.1 or earlier - data in V2.X format tags is not displayed when a track is playing.
- If iTunes burns MP3's to a CD, it does so with the same file name as the file has on the hard drive, with a two digit track number and a space appended to the front (so that "Shout.mp3" becomes "05 Shout.mp3"). If the length of the file name, including the leading characters and the ".mp3" at the end, is more than 32 characters, the Nav can't access the file, and it won't appear in the track selection list.
- If the MP3's are burned with other softeware (in my case, RecordNow) that provides an "8.3" file name on the CD, the songs show up in the track selection list, and can be played.
So I have updated all the tags on my files to V1.1 (just took a couple of clicks to do them all), and I have written a program that will take an exported PlayList song list and copy them all to a temporary directory, from where I can burn them to CD so that they work in the Nav unit.
Data mode: Mode 1
File system: ISO 9660 only
File name length (ISO): Max. of 31 chars (Level 2)
Character set (ISO): ISO 9660 (standard ISO CD-ROM)
I also make sure to uncheck (allow path depth of more than 8 directories) - not really needed but unchecked anyway
Uncheck Allow more than 255 characters in path
and lastly check Do not add the ';1' ISO file version extension - though from this thread this would probably be OK because the file length would still be less than 32 characters.
Remember, this truncates your file length to 31 characters. If you are like me, most of your MP3s that you've ripped from disk have artist-album-track-song.mp3. Be sure to get rid of everything but the song name before saving or it won't make much sense on your nav unit. Same goes for your folder names (and you should use folders because the nav unit lets you select the folder so this helps in playing individual albums).

1. Tracks (and whole folders) don't appear or play.
2. The same track plays multiple times.
3. Tracks in the Select Track list are highlighted incorrectly and selecting one plays a different track.
4. Tracks stop playing short of the end.
5. If you back into the previous track the time of the track may be VERY long (over 30 minutes for a 3 minute track).
6. If you forward or reverse on some tracks it keeps repeating the same section of the song.
I have used ITunes, Nero, and Roxio (2 versions) running under Win XP and Vista. I have produced disks with each that demonstrate all of these problems. The program you use doesn't seem to matter once you learn how to use it. I like Nero simply because it is easier to learn. ITunes was a very steep learning curve for me and now I get spam from Apple. Roxio is easy to learn but it tends to crap on the disk fairly often and you have to burn it over.
Issues 1 through 3 are caused by file names greater than 25 characters. Greater than the limit and the track goes missing. Then the next readable track plays instead. When it finishes, the next track to play should be the one that just played so it plays it again. Burn 10 tracks in a row with long file names and it will play #11 11 times in a row.
The Select Track menu, however, seems to know what is on the disk even though it won't display it. If you had 2 long names in the first 10 tracks, then selecting the song that should have been 11 will play 9. You do the math.
The same applies when it highlights the track that is supposed to be currently playing. Playing 9 highlights 11.I have seen a few tracks with 26 and 27 character file names that have been OK but I've also seen several that went missing. I have used AF5 ( http://www.fauland.com/af5.htm ) for several years. It is fairly easy to find files with more than 25 characters. (It is a fairly high powered renamer that is very easy to learn IMHO.) I believe, though haven't proven yet, that you ARE allowed 32 characters in the ID3 Title, Artist, and Album tags. I know I've seen some album titles that were far longer than 32 characters and they display ok though truncated.
The last 3 issues are all related to using Variable Bit Rates. The nav unit plays VBR tracks just fine except it doesn't have any idea where the end is. Sometimes it plays only a short section of the beginning. Sometimes seems to play perfectly. The result is fairly random but the only ones that play "completely" are the ones with significant silence at the end and you don't notice the truncation. Forward and reverse on these is very problematic. It almost always gets lost and starts playing the same thing over when you stop moving. There is also no way to back into them to play the last few minutes without confusing it.
Unresolved - I haven't had time yet to play much with the ID3 tag versions. I am surprised to hear that version 2.x don't appear in the display since I have never taken any precautions in the approx. 500 tracks I've burned in testing so far so I'm sure some of those would have had newer tags though I've never noticed missing info. But I haven't checked so I'll just do that from now on because it is an easy fix also.
