I would like to mount a large external USB HD in the trunk. Hopefully 500 Gig. Anyone know what if any head units can read from a HD that big? Then I can transfer files rather easily. Hopefull both audio and video formats.
I am currently running an Ipod via Inet (???) on my Alpine and I don't like the sound quality from the head phones out.
I have also seen some ads for upgrading the headphones output on the Ipod, has anyone had this done?
I know the Kenwood DNX7100 has a USB port (2.0 I think). I would guess that the USB port is standard speed. I've never run a big drive (including power) off a USB, so I'm not sure it you can get enough power to it.
Two things, as stated, the DNX7100 supports not only USB 2.0, there is no practical limit to the size, there may be a limit to the number of items in a folder though.
Also, the 7100 supports the high speed interface to the iPod via the docking connector, not the head phone jack, it also controls it via the screen so the ipod can be in a glove box, etc...
Kenwood DNX7100 has awesome usb, also the new pioneer that has it built in I dont remeber model off hand but I can look it up, I did a 50gig harddrive with for a buddy and it worked great, only downside is at initial bootup it takes 20 seconds or so for it to read the entire harddrive then it starts playing from where you left off.
as far as sound quality on you ipod coming from the headphone jack, get one of these cables http://autosound2000.com/ipodadapters.htm either the ainet alpine specific or universal it will give you a cleaner line out signal for better sound quality and charge ipod at the same time, i use this cable with my alpine and SQ is top notch jsut as good as a CD. And no matter what headunit you get that has ipod controls if you have a ton of music its gonna be a PIA to navigate
I'll bypass the ac conversion on the extermal hd and go straight to DC. That way it will get the power it needs. Was thinking the usb hd would be faster to navigate then the Ipod.
I'm going to do some more research and I'll post back what I set up. Got the itch to redo my system.
you're probably talking about the redwine modded ipods, this bypasses the internal amp and thin pcboard traces, it's an audiophile upgrade but you will need an external amp anytime you want to listen to headphones with your ipod. you will be better off just using the dock connector's pre-outputs and go into the rca inputs of your headunit. I have a relatively inexpensive dock to rca connector that is plugged into my dared mp-5 hybrid tube headphone amp at work and it sounds great.
I have the Kenwood 435u in my mustang, and the front usb controls my ipod thru the stereo remote and also flash drives work great. i havent tried a full sized external hard drive, but i would imagine it should work. The only thing is that this is a single din unit.
