I posted this in another area but here goes : I replaced the speakers in a 76 and now I have a popping and static noise when I sound the horn or even touch the horn button. Any ideas ?? - Thanks
This car is stock, except for the steering wheel and horn. When I touch the horn static and popping sounds come out of the left side speaker.
Since you said those aren't stock I'd start there. Could be there's a loose connection or the power for the horn got tied to the same circuit as the stereo.
Just changing out speakers shouldn't have caused anything like this. The only other thing I can think of is if you had the stereo powered up while you were changing the speakers and the speaker wires touched, causing a short. Could have damaged the amplifier in the head unit and now when there's an electrical draw you get the pop.
I think the car is possessed and you should give it to me, then I will perform an exorcism on it and remove the demon in the speaker.
Just kidding.
I would switch the left and right speakers and see if the issue follows the speaker or stays on the same side, this would tell you if it was the speaker or a possible wiring/channel issue.
