MDF is the ideal material. It is very fine particle particle board. You can sand it , cut it, router it, etc. It is also more sound deadening that any other material that is practical. Definitely better than the other stuff. This is also what the top speaker makers make their cabinets with.

In the 10 years I've been working for/through stereo shops. Birch plywood has always been my more prefered. Especially when using fiberglass and bondo. MDF is good and used by major manufactureres, 1. because its fairly cheap!, 2. the characteristics of it to flex, work well. Just my $0.02
MDF is better than plywood. Plywood is not consistant. It has pockets of air, lower density and because of these factors doesn't have the dampening factors critical to producing quality sound reproduction. Stay away from the plywood. The MDF is far easier to work with. You can cut, drill, glue, router, and its all clean due to the uniform consistency and no splinters.
