Has anyone built a system using a 8" woofer in the door to cover mid-bass and sub duties. I really don't want to deal with a sub in the rear of my c6. I always seem to have sub box regret sooner or later in my installs. I was thinking a "musical" 8" like jl might be a good compromise. Diamond makes a 3.5 with a dome tweet to handle the upper range. If I crossed over the 8 @ 1000hz ya think it would sound ok. I know I won't have big base out of the 8's but with a quality speaker and enough amp I think it would work.
8" in the doors can be done, however you'll have to find a different spot to mount the mids and tweets otherwise you'll just be firing into the door panel. Englandgreen used 8" Rockfords in his doors.
I'd put the diamond 3.5 in the stock loc. they're a co-ax. Could I fit a 4" in the stock loc? Focal makes 4" only and would like the best quality possible.

Yes you can run 8's ... you either need a low fs large format tweet (think home audio) to pair it with, run some sort of 3 way setup with a dedicated midrange and tweet, or use a 3" or so widerange (check out partsexpress).
If you plan on running subless .. spend the time to properly deaden your doors and de-couple the drivers ... I personally am very happy with the product from Rick at Raamaudio, especially the ensolite.
I planned on deadening the doors up good, I think the right 8" should give a good punch. But can I fit a focal 100cv in the stock 3.5 loc? they're 2.25" deep and 122mm across (4in). I then could use a 5.25 matching cv in the rear for fill.
Ok, answering my own questions today.. look up focal 210 cv1 @ woofersetc.com. 8" with tweeter 160 watt capacity. May be viable option for others that don't want sub box and can live without big thumpers. I think I'd still use a quality 3.5 up top for better imageing though.
I deadened my doors with dynamat xtreme. Running 8" kickers for now with 4" midrange and 1" tweeters. Sounds real good. I've removed my 12" sub and still like the way it sounds.
I'll suggest something a little different than the others.
Since you'll be trying to reproduce low frequencies with a driver that will also be handling some significant portion of the midrange, there will be some problems with intermodulation distortion. It's a bit different than using a 3-way component set with a subwoofer.
The solution I think works best in this setup is to use a very high quality 2-way component set (custom or otherwise) with a small midrange (3.5-4"). Put the mid in the door, and play with the tweeter location for imaging (talk to Fej ) Use an active crossover with steep slopes (24dB/octave) and set the crossover point somewhere between 185-300. This way you'll avoid most of the distortion issues. It also keeps you from having to find an 8" midbass that's capable of high-quality reproduction up to 1 kHz (short list). This idea would require exceptional components, but allows some flexibility in the midbass choice. The low-fs tweeter isn't necessary in my proposal, but still could work if you chose that route.
Thanks for all the info. If I recall correctly vifa supplies speakers to more than one car stereo brand. Found a 4ohm 8" that would probably work nice. Thanks.
