Seems like glide touch is mostly out so have the Alpine units improved? I am looking for a new HU and always liked Alpine, found the SQ to be good, until glide touch came, which I didn't like too much, and may go back. So for SQ what are the contenders up to around $500?

Thanks,

The glide touch units sounded identical to the previous ones.
Lately, Alpine has gone to ****. Lost their features, quality has gone down. They are releasing a new model soon with 24 bit dac and some of the old features.
Pioneer has nice features, and 24 bit burr-brown, if you can live with the pioneer hiss.
Thanks for the input Kale. Almost 20 years ago I had Pioneer Premier and can't recall any hiss, this is an issue on newer Pioneer products? I'll look into the other brands listed and start reading up.
Since the late 90s I'd say. Pioneer units have a faint background hiss.
The newest ones also have a 'microfuse' which is soldered to the mainboard. If you disconnect an rca, or an rca shield grounds on the car while the head unit has power, it will blow it. It is not user serviceable.

So, that sucks. The Pioneer higher line had nice features too, but the background hiss is a deal breaker for me. As for the fuse, the owner should be able to change that out without going to service, that just seems wrong on Pioneers part. So I'll check out Clarion and Eclipse.
