I have been seeing all the threads in regards to the this modification. My question is when performing this modification do you have to lower the heater/AC unit thus making the ashtray smaller or non exsistant? Thanks. R/ Al
you can move the ac down, but you have to mod the bezel. Either way, if you go with the double din, or move the ac controls down so that you dont block the vents, you have to mod the dash. if you dont mind blocking the vents, which most dont after they find out the work involved in moding the dash. but if you like to do the work yourself, its definitely worth it. or if you have the cash to pay for the bezel already modded.
GPG, thanks for your reply. I apologize but I don't fully understand the response.
To fit a double din stereo receiver like the pioneer avic d3 or kenwood 7100 in the dash of the C5 the dash must be modded for the receiver to fit.
I'm assuming that when the stock unit is removed that the space opening left is not tall enough for a double din? Or is it the width? Or both?
Thanks for the reply. R. Al
The factory head unit is a 1.5 din and not wide tall enough opening for the double din unit. The sides are fine as a double din is actually smaller, unless you want to fill the bezel in more so there is no space on the sides. You can either do the work yourself to the bezel by searching many post including the sticky at the top of the audio section or C5KIDD sells them. There is a little, well alot more work than just the trim bezel just so you know.. You will also need to cut the brackets out of the mounting cage as well and remount them in the location needed for your install. Ask alot of questions and do alot of reading on this and you will find alot of info for this mod. DPG and PEntavolvo did my install, but i did my bezel myself. Its not that hard just takes alot of sanding and filling.

he nailed it. sorry if my answer was unreadable. they sometimes are because i start to just bable.
Here is the write up I did when I was doing mine. I was installing a monitor for my carPC, but it is the same concept since the monitor is basically the same size as a double din HU.

First, yes, you HAVE to mod your bezel. The double din unit is taller and narrower (yes narrower) than the stock unit.
As far as the A/C controls go, I've seen a couple guys successful at keeping them in the original locaiton and only modding the top sectionof the bezel. That will depend entirely on the exact unit you get and the exact measurements of it. The Kenwood DNX-7100 has a 7" screen and the A/C controls must be moved down. I've seen one Eclipse installed without moving the A/C controls.
