OK, I want to put a sirius unit where the ashtray is. it would have to be a small unit that can be fitted behind the flip door.
I know ive seen this done more than once. im ready to do this.
Anyone know of any models they will work and id love to see any installs.
Thanks !!
This was what i used to have back before i got the mod bug and needed a new set up. It was I think the REPLAY version from Sirius. I got it at Wal MArt for like 60.00 and it plugged into my cig lighter and worked of FM frequency. It can be wired direct as well.
I went with the Sirius Starmate brand which is even smaller than the one above and it fits in the ash tray dish and is still small enough that my lighter plug is exposed with the lighter still in it. If you look at the picture above you'll see that the Sirius unit takes up the entire ash tray. The brand I got fits exactly in the right side compartment and the left side is open with the lighter exposed. lI had it hard wired from behind...looks great and works fantastic. Of course the door closes over it nicely to keep it hidden.
I ran the original Delphi Roady XM tuner in the ashtray slot and still had room for the accessory port/cigarette lighter. I plugged the power in there, attached the antenna, and ran it into my AUX input for my head unit. I didn't have to cut anything... just wedged it in there.
I have my Sirius replay mounted in my ash tray area. I used double sided adhesive and attached the plastic mounting bracket to the ash tray, this allows easy removal of the radio from the mounting bracket, since I swap it to other vehicles. I hardwired my sirius and radar detector with a radio shack micro switch to the 12 volt outlet near the ashtray so I can leave them on (eg I go into a store and pause the radio), or shut them off so they don't drain the battery (since GM outlets don't turn off with the ignition). Here are some pics of the radio and install, you can't see the micro switch that I installed later.
I just finished relocating the antenna because it kept falling off that shelf once the velcro got dirty. I used some double sided sticky tape and mounted it upright underneath the deck similar to how you see it here. Surprisingly the reception is as good or better that the antenna that's outside the rear deck, so its nice and concealed and gets great reception!

I also hardwired the radio thru the aux input (cd changer) by using one of those converter boxes, but I found that the radio sounds better (go figure) at least 70% of the time. I think results may vary depending if the antenna is inside the windshield like in my car, or outside like in other models. In windshield antennas have to be the best setup for FM modulator, hands down.
