Time for another newbie question. Im getting ready to order some Elemental Designs 9Kv.2 Subwoofers with their cubby hole boxes. I need to know how to order the subs though, the dual 2 or dual 4 voice coil. Ill be running them with a JBL1200.1 amp, slight overkill but ill have the gains turned down. I dont know what difference the two different versions will make. Any help?

Your amp is rated as follows:
787 Watts RMS x 1 channel at 4 ohms and ≤ 1% THD + N
1114 Watts RMS x 1 channel at 2 ohms, 14.4V supply and ≤ 1% THD + N
If you want it to play for a long time with it not heating up quite a bit, get the dual 4 ohm, hook up each coil in each woofer in parallel and then series the two seperate woofers. This will give you a 4 ohm load.
If you want to play max power for short terms, then get the dual 2 ohms and hook them up the same way (parallel the two voice coils and then series the two woofers) for a 2 ohm load.
Ill be using two subs. Not planning on really cranking it too crazy, but moderate level for extended times. I was thinking the 4 Ohm as well, just wanted someone who knows what they are talking about to confirm it. Thanks Vince! (you pretty much designed my stereo and supplied most of it, now I just need to get you to install it!)

Looks like that amp is only 2 ohm stable so you'll want to buy the dual 2 ohm version. Wire the 2 voice coils on each sub parallel. Then wire the two subs together in series to get a 2 ohm load and make a happy amp.
I see I was too slow to reply. So, what he said!

I could be missing something here, but I could swear it says 787rms at 4Ohms, as Vince also said. Where did you come up with the 2Ohms stable?

The JBL site is where I got my info. The 2 ohm # I gave was based on the assumption that you wanted max power. Of course yo can run less of a load (4ohm), I was not disputing that. When I said "only 2 ohm stable" I meant you couldn't go any lower than 2 ohm, as some amps will let you go lower (.5-1ohm).

Think I got it! You scared me for a sec. You guys have to speak slowly around me...Im a little slow sometimes!
I would get the D4's, wire each sub in series up to 8 ohms. Then parallel them together for a final load of 4 ohms which will yield plenty of power and keep the amp cooler
