While not common, his is not a rarity. I can't tell you how many times I've encountered this, and it's not limited to hatches and SUVs.

Yeah, I saw a collision in which a 35-lb bag of dog food collapsed the back seat onto a 9-year-old boy, pinning him against the back of the front seat. In another, a poorly-mounted driver flew off the back package shelf and struck the front right passenger in the back of the head. It really does happen way more often than people hear about.

P.S. Both died at the scenes.
