Default Will Other GM Navigation Units Work in a C6

All,

Question is: Will the Navigation units from any other GM vehicles (Escalade, Denali, Tahoe, etc...) work in a 2007 C6? They seem to be more readily available used and for less $$$.

I am assuming thay are all double din and are basically the same? Bose, Onstar, XM, etc... Has anyone tried this in a C6?

If not, what am I missing, are the two units that much different?

I did do searches and only saw a quote where the Escalade unit was the unit that should have been used in the C6, but no detail as to why it wouldn't work.

Don't jump on me if this is a stupid question. I am new to C6 Audio and all of the mess that GM seems to have engineered into it between models.

Thanks,

Ron

It's not really about the audio side of things, it's the car side of things. Specifically it's the data bus used for systems communication. The C6 is still using the older serial data bus "GM24" system. That's bascially a 24 wire harness & plug setup. Most other '07 and newer GM's have moved to the 29bit GM LAN system so units from those will not work.

I've used several of the GM NAV systems and I gotta tell ya, it ain't worth the hassle. If the cost is your primary concern, I bet you can find AVIC D1's and D2's on eBay for the cost of those factory systems. They'll look better, sound better, work better, offer more options like Bluetooth and iPod control and be WAY easier to install. Better than that, I can guarantee they'll work. No idea if those other units will work in C6.

There's my pair of pennies.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of the 24 versus 29 bit lan difference. Very suprised the Vette is still lagging behind other models. What's up with that???

I am looking at the Pioneer Avic D3 and Z2. I lean torwards the aftermarket for overall quality, but keep debating on going with the OEM for compatibility and S/W control, XM, and HUD display, etc... Just thought that if I could find the OEM unit or a decent price, I'd stick with OEM. I didn't order my C6, so it had what it had. Had everything but the Navigation...

I've heard that if I go with a D3 or Z2 I will need to replace my OEM XM tuner as well. Correct?

Thanks,

Ron

Hey Ron,

The only thing that aftermarket can't give you is HUD integration, and unless you get a C6 NAV you won't get that with any of the other GM factory models either. From what I've read just popping a C6 NAV unit in there won't just automatically provide the HUD, you have to do some other stuff to get it to work(I don't know what). You can get the steering wheel controls to work. You would have to change out the OEM XM module for an aftermarket head unit.

As far as Corvette lagging behind it's about manufacturing decisions. Corvette is a very small volume product so you maximize your investment and engineering. To change from the serial data bus to the GM LAN system would be a massive overhaul to not only the stereo systems but the entire car - BCM, engine controls, dashboard information... the whole shooting match. I was half expecting them to do it for '08 since they were changing engines, but it looks like they did not.
