Default '85 base model stereo removal and upgrade

I am approaching the point in my work on my '85 where I'm going to start redoing the interior. I figure while I have carpet and panels out it would be a good time to tackle audio.

First a disclaimer, most I've ever done on a car is swap out speakers and head units, I make no claims to being a car audio expert. I know some general electronics including how to solder wires but that is about the extent.

My question concerns the front speakers, I know on my base stereo that I have a pair of dashboard speakers and no door speakers. Does anyone know what I would have to do to create door mounts for speakers? Is there a better place to install speakers? There's a lot of material out there about the Bose systems but not a lot about these base model systems so I'm at a bit of a loss how to start.

you would cut them out of wood. MDF. Make some speaker rings with grills, or use the grills with the speaker, though mho, most modern grills are really out of place and ugly.

Sorry, I guess I'm more of trying to figure out who has created mounts for these in the past, what they mounted to, how they positioned them that kind of beast. I've never torn down a vette door panel with, or without the bose system in it so I don't know if there is an existing place that I could mount the box to. I'd make my own speaker grills or find some out of another vette and recover them.

I really can't find any information on the base stereo out there and that's part of my confusion, I don't know where I'd start in terms of replacing / upgrading it.

I think you'll have to cut the door panel. Here are images from my (was bose) install:

Yeah that is sort of what I was figuring, I like the look you have there, clean and minimalistic. I might see if I can find some door panels out of either a bose system or some used ones that I can salvage for experimentation purposes. Heck even just one would give me some room to play with the setup. This car is a long term project so I'm not rushing on anything I just want to start thinking about what I'm going to have to do to make it all work.
