Default Sat reciever

OK guys, my systems just about finished. Just a few more touch ups and Ill post pics with a write up so you can all see what youve been helping me with.

For now I need to resolve a sat radio issue. I placed the antenna in the rear bumper behind the taillights. I drove around for a while and thought it was going to work out. Mid day I always had 2 or 3 bars on the signal strength, but in the evening while heading south I get no reception at all. As soon as I turn it picks it up again so I assume the sat is in the southern sky in the evening and high in the sky during the day (anyone confirm this). Has anyone tried to place the antenna on top of a tail light or something similiar to get it a little higher? I figure it could be placed on the light housing with double sided tape but worry about a heat issue. The other option would be to try and fab some kind of a bracket that is like a stand to push it up to the top of the cavity. Any Ideas?

Oh yeah, its Sirius sat, and an 02Z

Sean, to help solve the reception issue. We placed a customers sat antenna under the hood. put it on the fender next to the battery box. I'll try to dig up a pic.

Ya know, it blows me away that these things are getting reception at all in these locations. With GPS being a "line of sight" technology, I wouldnt think under the hood or in the bumper would work at all.

Its gonna be a PITA re-running that cable (seems like I have more screws left over everytime I take it apart ) I may have to give it a try though. Thanks Dave, I owe you at least a 6 pack for all your help! know anything about the dimmer control?

I was hoping to get my HU to dim with the rheostat by the HUD control, like the HVAC. I know you can tap into the HVAC harness (pin 16 i think, cream wire) but im not sure if the HU has to have this feature built in. I though plugging into the accessory valet would do this but just found out it will not, seems in their testing for this they could not find any HU's that would support it, so they left the feature off of the valet. My HU has a sire labeled "ILLUMINATION CONTROL", but no other related leads. the HU does dim when I turn the lights on, is that all pin 16 will give me with this HU?

Is that a xm or sirius antenna under the hood? Xm sats are in stationary orbits while sirius sats are not. That may be why your reception changes with the time of day. Xm also has a much larger ground repeater network (over 900). In the northwest xm has much more reliable reception. I don't think a sirius antenna would work very good under the hood up here.

Well thats good to know, It works OK in the back so Im sure it would work better under the hood. It would have better line of sight with the sat behind you than the opposite with it in the back (poos line of sight with the sat in front of me). Anyway, they are combining soon so I would expect the coverage to improve for both?
