I recently replaced my bose system with a Pioneer CD/DVD/radio/navigation system in my '91. I am really happy with the new system accept there are warnings that it is against the law for the driver to watch a DVD or perform some navigation tasks while driving. I certainly understand the reason for the law except my wife would like to do those things while we drive.
Has anyone found a way around these disabling features with other systems? I switched the wire from the emergency brake to straight ground and gained some control, but the navigation system knows when I'm moving and limits some features and flashes warnings. It's a bother to pull over and pull on the emergency brake to change navigation points.
As it is an aftermarket stereo, I'd guess it knows you are moving based on the fact that the GPS tells it you are. On some factory cars (like my Aurora) it uses the vehicle speed input, which is also used for speed compensated volume. In that case you can put a switch inline to be able to change things while driving, though other parts of it won't function correctly.
It might be you would need a different system that doesn't have that feature, though.
My Kenwood DVD/navigation had a wire that was supposed to be wired into the e-brake switch. I just wired it to a toggle switch so I can use the DVD player/navigation at will. The navigation part also allowed me to disable it in the setup menu so I don't need to flip the switch to input info.
I have a JVC DVD 7" monitor in my F150. It stated in the instruction manual to connect the wire to the E-brake. If done this way, you can only watch a movie while sitting still. I think I just grounded it to the nearest ground and I can watch movies anytime.
I have a D3 and it can be bypassed very easily. Just take a look on the link provided above
Thanks guys. I have already grounded my parking brake so when I get some time I'll pull out the deck and ground the mute wire as described. It looks easy enough. (famous last words, right?)
Do you have pictures of your install? I also have a 91 and have been looking at the same nav system. Did you install it yourself or have a shop do it?
Not sure if you were talking to me or Gary but I had someone else install it because I didn't have time to do it. This was first time I let someone else install my car audio components in my vehicles. Let me tell you it will be the last. While they did a clean job on the install, the wiring was subpar. I basically ended up tearing apart most of the installation and rewired everything. I could have taken back to the shop where it was installed but I didn't want them touching my car again.
Here's a few pics of the HU. I don't have my amp install pics but I'll find a few if your interested.
Items installed
Pioneer AVIC D3 HU w/ ipod connection
Pioneer Premier TS-C720PRS Components in doors

I don't have any pictures yet. I'll try to get some posted. Ciruit City did the install on the deck. I think they did a good job. I think any shop's install is only as good as the technician doing the work. The guy said he had to do a little modification on the mounting bracket but no cutting on the dash was necessary. It fits right where the Bose was.
I couldn't figure out how to send all 4 pictures at once so I'm sending them one at a time. I also couldn't figure out how to make them smaller. Here's #2:
