Default Focal 5" Sub...

Does anyone have any experience with these? Would it work for the rear speakers in a z06 if i have Focal components in the doors (sound right?)

I can't find them forsale anywhere, but I know they make them. Anyone know who could get them? Prices?

i dont think they'ed work unless you sealed off the front of the speaker from the rear of the speaker at the very least

Can you be more specific? Focal made a few different 5" midbasses, but most are not suitable for car use.

That model's no longer made. It was used as part of a 3-way set. It's also not a subwoofer. It's a midbass. Think of it as a midrange that can't play frequencies high enough for a simple tweeter to take over. I might steer in another direction, depending on what you're trying to accomplish in the rear.

Well i think i'm just going to end up putting 5.25 coax Focal Polyglass in the rear now. And probably 1 - 8" JL sub in the rear, but not in the well. Probably in a corner. ... thoughts?

Yeah... A lot of people sold it as a sub. I heard one in a horn loaded enclosure, and it wasn't bad. I can't imagine it'd be much in a normal sealed box though.

The Focals will do fine as rear fill as long as you significantly attenuate. I don't have specific experience with any JL 8s but there are a number of excellent 8s out there from other manufacturers. A lot depends on your tastes and goals.

Yeah... A lot of people sold it as a sub.

well to be fair, it was designated in model number as a sub by focal.

replaced by the 13 WS, which is a 5" "subwoofer"

With "be" as part of the name, bet its expensive.

*edit,

MSRP is $600. That's just plain stupid, I don't care who you are. You aren't going to get decent output without at least a bunch of these, and even then, you are talking $2400 in "super high sq drivers" that live in an Octave where the vast majority of people have issues hearing even up to 10% distortion.

I always gag when I see someone putting more time/money into their sub, than into the rest of the system.

It's a sad day when even Focal is trying to cash in on the "oooohhhh, it's-got-a-big-surround-and-looks-cool-so-it-must-be-good" crowd.

So would that speaker work very well as rear fill in my z06 to go along with the Focal Components?

this was just an idea i had, so if ya'll know something better, please advise.

Would the Coax and small sub be better?

Goal is a loud system with clarity. I dont want alot of bass, but i want loud clarity.

I had a MB Quart 12 and it was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to much.

... CLARITY.

For something that works very well right out of the box... Focal Polyglass components with careful tweeter placement up front. Polyglass coaxes in back are fine, as long as they're really attenuated. Then invest in a high-quality amplifier.

Going to agree with this one. Focal K2 Power series is very nice as well.

Though I prefer the older Utopias over them, just very slightly.

It was never a part of the three way setup, the three way setup was the "165K3P", consisted of "TN52 Tweeter", "165K2P Midrange", and "165KBE Midbass".

Those that sold or used the "165KBE Midbass" as a subwoofer did so, but for the wrong applicatiion.

I wasn't able to locate it on their site, so I incorrectly assumed it wasn't made anymore. Nice find.

Focal has occasionally had the nasty habit of assigning more than one model number to the same raw driver depending entirely on it's use in the context of a system. It creates some confusion at times.

As much as I like Focal's OEM, I still recommend staying away from this one for the purposes of this thread.

If you really must use rear fill, just get a coax.

What setup do you have in the doors?
I went with an 8" focal sub in my doors, and a focal 2-way (mid/tweet). It is insane!!!! I love it.
