Static and HID's....EMI Help
Hi Guys,
So I got a good set of HID's from a member and when they are on they look great, however it induces alot of static on FM on my Pio. D1. Any ideas? Maybe throw some shielding around the harness lines?
Thanks
BTW, the one that comes up with a solution that works, ICS T-Shirt on me for your help.
Check the grounds on your HID kit. I installed HIDs and never got any noise issues. Also check the ground on the HU. You might have to ground the rcas at the HU. Seems to becoming a common issue with pioneer and rca grounding issues. I know that its not a D1 that has the issue in this thread, but its a pioneer. Try it and see if you still get the noise. http://www.icixsound.com/vb/showthre...hlight=pioneer
edit: Is it static only when you use FM? Make sure you have a good ground for those HIDs. That might be the issue and not the rcas.
grounding the rca's would only work if he was getting constant hiss on his head unit. he only gets hiss when the rio is on. I'm not sure what the best solution would be. hid's have ballasts right? is the ballast in a metal or plastic box? if it's in a metal box try grounding it. if it's in a plastic box try to mock up some sort of metal shroud for it and ground the shroud. you could probably make this out of a mesh material (maybe aluminum screen to test the theory?)

Thanks for taking a look guys... The static is only on FM (no xm on this car unfortunately) and is a quality kit that uses the factory wiring etc... It is weird, I can sometimes here a slight high pitch tone coming from the ballasts.
Maybe I should try wiring a different, more direct ground than the factory harness. At first I started bugging out thinking my tuner section in my HU went then I switch to parking lights only and it went away.
I do have a euro rubber ducky antenna in the back, I am going to try my old whip antenna now that I think about it.
Ballast can get hot so wrapping it isn't an option. Maybe wrapping the wires would help.... I am going to try the grounding idea first.
I know its a pain but try running new wiring for that kit. Use a relay and all that fun stuff. That's how I did mine. I didn't reuse the stock wiring. Only thing I used was the head light power as my trigger wire. By trying to add shielding to some of the wiring you are just band aiding the problem.
