No, the sound card is built in on the motherboard. I use no PCI-styled cards due to the compactness of the case; no real need for them anyway. The Xm module is a stand alone box that is connected to the computer's serial port. I purchased a special cable that is wired especially for the XM signal configuration. The Roadrunner application contains the program that recognizes the serial port signal. All channel selections are made on screen through this application. Hope this explains it.

Yes it does. I am glad to her that there is a mb that has 5.1 built in! Actually surprised to hear that these have a serial port- new laptops don't have them. I have several vinyl cutters that only run on serial because the software only supports serial connections-

it's a multi-function **** but can be used as a dial. think of it as an i-drive from bmw. you can custom map it to do anything you wish. like if you give it a twist you can scroll through menus, if you push it down you can have it act as an 'enter' command, if you pull up on the **** you could map it to go to your main menu (i think). etc.. etc.. you can even use it as a pointing device but it'd be much cheaper to just use a trackball for that

or does the mb have a built in card?
with my experience the onboard sound of the via boards will let you listen to the music and audio but it has a lot of downsides. You'll get much better results with a true soundcard or dac

Default Reviving this thread!

Jay2000,
Your install looks great! and very familiar...great minds think a like and all. I think you are the only other C5 guy who installed an 8" screen! I also placed the DVD drive under my screen, but I replaced the Xenarc alum bezel with a fabbed plastic one to hide the drive and my radar detector indicators.

Shuttle SS58G2 PC with 8" touch screen
P4 2.66MHz, 512Mb RAM, 60Gb 2.5" HD, Garmin GPS-18, WIN TV + FM PCI, Xenarc 800TSV w/ custom bezel, USB slot load DVD, 7port USB 2.0 Hub, 11 in 1 USB Card Reader, Mini keyboard, integrated trackball, USB Dlink 802.11g NIC, XM Commander w/Serial interface, Toshiba Bluetooth USB adapter, Pioneer ND-BC1 reverse camera, Sprint EVDO phone as modem
Onboard 5.1 Audio, TOSlink to AMP
Front Speakers: Polk db 6.5" components
Rear Speakers: Polk db 5.25"
Center: Polk db 5.25"
Sub: Elemental Designs 10"
Amplifier: Autotek MM5.1 Dolby/DTS 5.1 channel (50Wx5, 200Wx1)

I am looking at rebuilding my PC software load, what front end are you running? What GPS package? Are you on MP3Car.com?
never mind, just saw you are using RoadRunner and iGuidance

Here are pics of my project: More Pictures HERE

Maybe I missed it, but how did you attach the screen??? Is there some way to screw it into the mounting bracket (like the OEM head unit); or did you epoxy it in?

Thanks,
Kirk
