Go to Radioshack and ask for a 12v cigarette lighter power adaptor. They have universal ones with various output voltages and connectors on tap. If you want to install it permanently, just cut off the lighter socket.
I dont think he needs to be an ee to wire it up. basically you need your ~12v, ground and then the third pin will be your 5volt output.

So I see three contacts l l l based on your post I connect the 12v + to one of the outside contacts, the 12v - to the other outside contact,
and my 5v+ to the center contact ??
