There are outlets that sell "acoustical polyfill" as though that made any difference. Don't buy into any hype. It's all the same when the material is the same.
Because I have the ED 12" and saw the recent test done on the 10". Saw where the box size on the 10" was way off. So I thought I'd try to put some poly in the box to see if performance increased. Right now the box is 1.18 cubic feet. When I push it hard the sub will "rumble or shake". Don't know how exactly to describe it. It's like the speaker can't extend outwards enough. When it begins to extend too far, it'll sound bad.
When I push it, it begins to sound distorted. Not clear when I increase the volume. Just figures that the polly fill is cheap enough to experiment with. Thanks. Guess I'll have to start loose and go from there. See what sounds better.

Well, your issue could stem from a few things. What comes to mind first:
*Not enough power.
*Pushing sub past its limits. (too much power or box too big)
I've got 600 watts at 4 ohms going to it. So then should I try to reduce the box size and see what happens?
There's no way to know how that will affect the driver's performance without some test equipment, so no. You have too many unknowns for us to really do anything with. Kittah might be right about the sub being over-driven (too little power, though, is not the problem). It also might already be damaged. It might be that it's the wrong box. It might be functioning normally, and you're simply unhappy with its performance. Like I said, too many unknowns.
