I am getting ready to do the double din bezel mod. I am wondering what materials most use to back the bezel, since it will be narrower than the stock width. The audio section shows a wood backing. Has anyone used plastic or metal. Does anyone have backside Bezel photos of the process? Or after completion?
I was going to use ABS desolved in acetone for the glue/filler if that makes a difference.
Are you doing a monitor for a carPC or a DD head unit? My dash was for my carPC so I was able to get a headrest shroud that is made for the monitor and mold it into my dash. Now I can remove the monitor if I need to.. plus I didnt have to void the warranty on the monitor by opening it up so I could mold the front piece into the bezel.
As far as ABS vs Epoxy vs whatever else.. I used epoxy for mine and it turned out fine and didnt seem to be as messy as the ABS method looked.
i will try to take a picture this weekend. i used (my second time around) all abs. i used a combonation of abs sludge as well as a soldering iron to melt the pieces together. Def go with the abs sheets over the wood. much better results
I used the plastic surround that came with my Avic D3, taped it in place , and molded around it. I think you might find the ABS desolved in acetone to be a real pain.
This is what I used.(Both from Wal-mart) The fiberglass resin drys fast and is sandable, same for the bondo professional gold. Bondo professional gold works best for plastics.
you'll be much better off with either the abs stuff, plastic bumper repair or plastic epoxy to bond the plastics together. (i've moded 3 vette dashes and one rx-7 dash. the rx7 dash was bonded with fiberglass and bondo and showed stress cracks eventually)
i took a couple pics of my backside...well...the dash's backside though it's 11:30 and i'm still at work, i'll try to upload them tomorrow. i took two pictures. one has the abs method and the other has the plastic weld
