Default Do you tip your installer?

Just wonder... I never have... but I was wondering if it's considered something you should do or what...

I usually take my car to places like Tweeter, or the custom audio shops.

If so...how much?

I wouldn't tip an installer... or a mechanic, or anyone of that nature.

Though I suppose if it was an installer that made house calls, then a tip might be in order.

I agree, it's not customary to tip an installer, like you would a waiter. Most of the good installers take pride in their work, and a tip just lets them know that you noticed it, and appreciated their craftsmanship.

I've received tips on installs before, and I've also given a tip on an install too. Depending on how much custom work / time / and price you have involved in the project should determine your tip level. I agree with the $20-$100 range.

If I felt like the installer had taken particular care of my car then I would make the thank-you gesture sure. If it was clear that he did his job and that was it, then I wouldn't worry about. Or if they hover because they EXPECT a tip... that just gets under my skin. But then I have issues.

I've never had anyone do an install for me, so I don't know.

I do tip my window tint guy. I also tip the guys who swap wheels and tires for me if I can tell they took their time and were extra careful with the car.

You should also tip your detailer as well.

I've tipped installers, mechanics, tire guys, and car washers.
It doesn't take much to show someone you appreciate what they do.
I take my car to the same places everytime and the service providers have gotten to know me and appreciate what I do (tip), so I think I get better service to boot.
My scale:
Car washer/Tire guy tip: $5
Installer/Mechanic tip: $10-$20
I tip the person not the shop. I actually put the money in his or her hand.

i agree a tip isnt to be expected like to a waiter/waitress
i also tip the guy that does my wheels/tires because he always goes out of his way to get me a good deal and not scratch or nick anything. Once the car came out with some smudges on it that I pointed out he apologized and didnt charge me for the alignment which was spot on

If you're absolutely astonished with the workmanship, by all means tip. The purpose of tipping is to promote quality service which also means if you ever come back to them (for say an upgrade or modification) you should receive the same quality service you did the first time if not better.

Well, actually, he tipped me as the installation took about three hours longer then it should have, so they took another 200 bucks off it.............

isn't it their job to do the things they do, aren't they supposed to do a good job so you will come back? I think they should do the best job they can wether they are getting tipped or not. they still get paid!

Extra effort such as job being completed ahead of schedule, additional unexpected quality workmanship, or just quality customer service should be rewarded in some manner.
