Check this out from "The Komomans" website:

It shows you how to tap into the C6 HU to get the RCA pre-outs you need to run to your amps.
Here is a link to his install pictures:

From what I remember, he said his replacement speakers sounded pretty good with the stock HU. Maybe he can chime in here and give you more details.

Adding an amp and speakers to the stock head makes an enormous improvement, that I can say for sure. The difference in a head for iPod, well that I can only guess. My guess is it will make a signicant difference but not as dramatic as amp & speakers. Since moving to the Alpine changes the digital-to-analog conversion from the iPod itself to the Alpine I think it absolutely has to make a difference. The iPod's internal decoder and analog output are notoriously poor. I have my iPod connected to my IVA-W205 head in my daily driver truck and with a good rip really can't hear a difference between the CD and the iPod. I suppose with the engine off I would probably be able to hear something, but since that isn't how you usually listen to my mind that's moot.
To stray a touch from your question, unless your budget is tight, I'd pony up the extra cash and go double-din. Single din units just don't look as good in the dash of our cars as doubles do. I really like the Alpine 205 I have in my truck, though the jury is still out on the docked portable NAV unit (I haven't used it enough yet to decide).
My opinion in general is that aftermarket is always better than stock (rare exceptions both ways) so my recommendation is go the full boat.
