In a quest to improve the sound of the stock system in my C5, I'm going to add a set of tweeters in parallel with the stock twiddlers. But I want to place mine underneath the factory grills instead of the A pillars. Does anybody have a picture of what the stock Bose speakers look like in the door so that I can judge whether or not my idea will work before I tear into the door?

I don't have a pic, but I've seen the insides many times. There is plenty of room to surface mount a tweeter with space to clear the grille when the panel is reinstalled. Be sure you get one that can be mounted at an angle so you can aim it up towards the ear.

I kinda figured there would be room, but I wanted to make sure.
I will probably go with a set of the Boston Pro Series. I've got a set in my Supra and they sound phenominal (course, there's also a lot more power going to them in the Supra than there will be in the Vette, but that's ok!).

For lowest distortion, you want to put the tweeters in parallel with the rear
Twiddlers. The wires are available on the back of the HU.
For best sound, the tweeters should point at the occupants heads. You can try the experiment of placing surface mount tweeters on the dash pointing at the windshield. Adjust the aim to get best reflected sound off the glass.

99HT,
Don't you think that putting the tweeters as low and forward in the doors as possible would help to equalize the distance between the tweeters more than a dash mount would? I really don't want to pull the soundstage (as it is) any further to the left than necessary. I was even thinking about going in the kick panels, but I think the torque tube hump in the middle would make it hard to aim them. Any thoughts?
Re: Adding Tweeters to C5 Doors... Need Pics (98Pace)
When you add a "4" ohm tweeter and it's crossover in parallel with the front 3.5" Bose Twiddlers, the impedance that the amplifier will see will be very low where the two speakers overlap in frequency response. The front 3.5" Bose Twiddler will have a frequency response similar to any add on tweeter. In reality it would be best to put the add on tweeter in parallel with the rear 5.25"/6.5" Bose Twiddler wires. The rear Twiddler is a mid range speaker. Putting a tweeter and crosover in parallel with it will mean little overlap in the frequency response of the two speakers. The amplifier will not have to supply as much current at a specific frequency to both speakers at once, so it will run cooler and produce less distortion.
Tweeters are very directional. If you mount them low on the door, your ankles and knees will be the only parts of your body getting the full frequency response of the tweeters, not your ears. I would not be worried about trying to equalize distance of all drivers, the human ear cannot resolve phase differences for high frequencies.

P.S.
If needed, you can always add a resistor in series with a speaker and crossover to lower it's output level. You will have to select a value to suit your tastes.
To me, I think the gain of the Bose HU Twiddler power amp is too low. It seems that on some old CD's and talk radio FM stations, the amp cannot be driven to full output level. I modified mine to improve this problem.

99HT:
Thanks for the advice. I still think I want to look at putting the tweets in the doors and aim them up and towards the middle of the car. I've had great success with kick panel mounted speakers before and I would really prefer to maintain a completely stock look. I'll just have to take a look at what I have to work with and see.
Have you found any other convenient mounting locations that will work with no mods to the car? It looks like dash mounting them would work fairly easily, but I think that putting them on the A pillar would require more than just double stick tape!
BTW, just out of curiosity, what is your background in mobile audio? You know a whole lot to just be an enthusiast! I used to be an installer in the early 90's, but I got out of it to make more $$$ with computers. I've been away for a while, but I'm getting back into it now. Too much fun to be had to not still dabble!!

I have a set of Infinity Reference Series 1" tweeters mounted on the lower part of the A Pillar covers and aimed right at my head. Ran them off the rear wires at the same time I replaced the rears with Infinity 6.5" Coaxials with aimable tweeters. They come with a built in crosover. You can rely on 99HT for the best info here. Followed his instructions for my Subwoofer install and his advice regarding the HU and the tweeters and everything works and sounds great. Replacing A pillar covers is not expensive.
The Infinity tweeters can be mounted 1. Surface, 2. recessed adjustable, or
3. surface angled. It is nice to have the mounting options with the tweets.
