I just swapped out the 3.5" door speakers in my C5 (Bose equipped). I went with Infinity Reference 3012CF replacements from Crutchfield (discontinued,$30 delivered). They came with 100 mf bass blockers which turned out to be a MUST. If I'd known I'd need them, I would have just ordered the plug and play blockers they sell for $10 more. Without the blockers, you get way too much distortion. The speakers fit fine and the only hassles were changing the connector spades (GM insists on using the narrow spades for the postive blades) and rigging the bass blocker capacitors to the positive wires.
My initial impression is that I've gained a bit more color and clarity than the paper cones provided. I don't have to push the new speakers quite as hard to get decent mid-range response. Vocals and guitars aren't as muffled. It's still not a great sound system but the improvement seems to have been worth the time and modest investment.
Thanks to everyone who makes this forum so informative, you made the job much easier to pull off.
I used some Led Zeppelin as my test music, that'll shake everything loose.
I didn't think I'd need bass blockers, given the configuration of the HU, etc. But I got a lot of bass bleeding into the mix. The caps definitely made a difference. Being that the 'vette is just my fun car, I won't go much further, but I could see replacing everything if I was going for the best sound. The mid's are still not where I like them and the staging is still a major issue. I'd add some tweeters, but the mid's would still be soft. All in all, I'm a little better off than when I started.
