I am changing the HU in my C5 to a Pioneer 5900. Just curious to know what the illumination wire is for? I am guessing night illumination when radio is off.
no it is to illuminate all the buttons on your new h/u. I thought WTF when I put mine in too and didn't connect it. Guess what, I got to take it back out and redo it!! After you get all the wires hooked up turn the car on before you button everything up and make sure it's all working good.
the illumination wire on your radio is to dim it etc when you turn the headlights on, thing is you cant hook it up to the stock harness cause that wire doesnt work, you have to tap the HVAC like in the C5 FAQ

I hooked mine up and I heard this little sizzle fry sound. Not good. So I left it unhooked. The unit is alright but the lights are bright. I wish I could tone them down a bit.
You can also tap the traction control button (C6) as it lights up when the headlights go on. You'll need to check with a voltage tester as to which wire to tap. It'll go to 12 (or more) volts when the headlights are turned on.
