Okay here's the problem. My MP3 CDs get scratched VERY easily in my center console compartment. I want a new method of storing my music that is both convient and won't scratch the CDs. Here's the solutions what I've come up with:
a) Add an Alpine Ai-Net CD changer
- pros: rather inexpensive, stores multiple CDs and with the additional remote looks really cool
- cons: I'm not familier with any that are WMA compatable
b) Add an MP3 player expansion input
- pros: least expensive solution
- cons: my MP3 player is only 512 MB
c) Replace Head unit with alpine IVA series head unit
- pros: DVD compatable and looks really freaking cool
- cons: expsensive and requires the sale of my current 7998
The good news is my Alpine CDA 7998 has a high resale value. It would be possible to sell mine in favor of an IVA (d310 or d105) for a net cost of ~$200 used.
I have a mp3 imput jack on the front of my faceplate on my cheap o sony xplod head unit,
and my I pod is only ( 3 -mb?gb? ?? ) and it holds about 850 songs and any thing over that starts to croud up the music, clairty starts to go, ext...
but - I absolutely love having 850 songs at the touch of a button, in a handy little size device less than the size of a pack of smokes.
id say upgrade the system to the mp3 - and then maby get a unit that has more storage capasity. my mom just got my brother in law a new i pod video 80 ( gig,mig,.. what ever ) for about 166$ after the instant rebate and 20% off coupon in the paper.
IMHO, after messing with several options, the iPod with Alpine full-speed digital connection is the best option. Changers take up precious space and analog connections sound bad no matter who makes any of the parts.
I'm one of those people who refuse to go with the iPod craze. I'm using a iRiver. It has internal sound processing (EQ, 3d simulator width control and the works)
I'm probably going to go with the new head unit idea. I really like the idea of Audio DVDs.... ad the occasional movie. (somthing cool for when you have a date )
That being said, my first choice is the Alpine IVA D310. it has all the features I want and I have plenty of space behind the passenger seat for the brain.
My second choice is the IVA D105. Essentially it's an IVA D310 but without the external brain and no LCD display when closed.

I was very anti-Apple, too. I was HU shopping and found my iDA-X001 on sale for $249.99. I snagged a 2 gig memory stick for $25 and was golden.
Then my buddy plugged in his iPod.
I now have a Nano and an iPhone. Both sound sweet! (I'll probably add a 701 to get some tuning back...)
Oh yea... I'm making this post from my iPhone. Color me an Apple convert.

The advantage to the Alpine "Full Speed" connection is that it's a digital connection between the iPod and the head unit. The actual decoding happens in the head unit, not the iPod. This is how I have my iPod connected to my IVA-W205 and it sounds damn good.
