well after reading way too much info on the is board then listening to a buch of speakers i am upgrading/ no replacing my entire audio system{ except dash speaker for onstar] as follows
MB Quart Q series components for the doors
Mb Quart premier coaxial for rear fill
JL audio 10w3 in custom box behind the seats with the sub box in the middle tilted to the rear and facing the glass hatch, amps in box on each side
Alpine pdx 4.150
Alpine 600.1
Pioneer avic Z2, bluetooth, xm/nav traffic/bojo rear cam/ipod
4gauage wiring, farada capacitor, etc,etc
Dynamat doors and rear trunk.
i stopped by the shop this evening and listened to the speakers without the sub and all i could say is wow. i was going with the mb quart premiers but got a great deal on the q series, i was worried that the sub would obstruct my limited rear view but it doesn't interfere at all. the sub goes in tomorrow then fine tuning and i get her back friday. now if i can only decide on 35% or 25% all around for my tint?
ok picked it up today and was happy with the the install and the condition the car was delivered back to me. they installed the JL Audio 10w3 in a custom fiberglass box between the seats{in the rear} and about a foot no more that 20 inches from the back of the seats tiltted facing the rear at an angle .the sub enclosure is in the middle of a amp rack with a Alpine pdx 600.1 for the sub and alpine pdx 4.150 .. the doors sound great even the rear fill . what im unsure is of the sub. it gets really boomy, i have set the level down to -4 on the Z2 , yet on some radio stations the base just seems to over power me, not in a good way. it seems that i have to adjust the sub for every input.i didnt check the alpine amp to see if there is something i can adjust to bring it down a bit. at home i have REl sub and it is very fast and musical. ' going to be heading back to the install shop in a few days but was curious if others might have some guidance .. .well other than i should have used a stealth box. i will post pics i the next day or two
A boomy sub usually means there's something up with the enclosure. Ask the installer what the internal volume of the box is, that will give folks here a better idea of what made need to be done.
Without getting too crazy, here... there could be one or a combination of a few problems. First, make sure there's no bass-boost or other EQ applied. That includes the head unit. Second, check the gain on the 600.1 to make sure it's not cranked. Backing that off may help if the other issues are not contributing.
Lastly, find out the enclosure internal volume. If it's too small, it will make the sub sound boomy and/or slow. Since you care to have a faster and more precise quality of bass, you'll need to pay close attention to the sub/enclosure design. If you're interested in anything other than a noise-maker of a sub, you have to know box volume fairly precisely in order to chose the driver correctly for your application. The driver you have needs a volume of nearly a cubic foot to operate well.

ok , i'll check the gain on the amp for the sub. the eq for the Z2 had the loudness contour ON and at low, flat EQ setting, the HPF was on at 80.. the staging was in the musicial studio if i am correct. anyone have any comments if and how i should be using these controls? thanks, neveo

i'll post some pics tonight
My recommendation would be to turn ALL that crap off and see how it sounds. Until you do that there's no way to be sure of where what you're hearing that you don't like is coming from.

Another thought... mess with the crossover point (and slope if available) while you have any other EQ/Loudness/etc turned off. Many component sets are good down to even 50 Hz, but the key is to find the point where the sub & speakers compliment each other.

yes it worked!!! all i needed was some time and some of the sound advice from this forum. I turned off loudness, changed the eq settings, adjusted the sub level, the source input levels, and the HPF to 80 and the system rocks. it is unbelievable how clear and precise the mb quart Q's are. the sub now complements the front components and the rears. this is the best car audio system i have ever had, i 'm very happy that i got rid of the stock Nav unit. not sure if i should sell it or keep for when i decide to trade it in on a new vette in 5 or so years.
i thought the back up cam would work when i was moving forward but that isnt true and i cant get the Z2 to play Ipod videos.....
now i can turn my attention to improving the bluetooth settings . my mic is on the a pillar but people have said that they cant hear me well, something about my voice sounding like i am cutting in and out.
anyway thanks to all that posted ... pics will follow
