Default 05 Nav questions.

Hello everyone. Last friday i bought a super clean 05 z51 coupe with nav. Love the car. I only have a few questions regarding the navigation system.

1) can i add XM or Sirius through the head unit, rather than the plug and play route?

2) Is there any way to play DVD movies on it?

3) Is the head unit "modifiable?" as in, can i change the start up screen etc?

Thanks guys.!

This should be able to be done. From what I have been told the harness is installed whether you order XM or not, but the antenna is not. The radio shouldn't have to be re-programmed, it displays the XM button when it detects the unit, but if you go with XM you may have to get the dealer involved because the GM XM unit gets VIN-locked and won't work until that is programmed. If you get the Sirius SIR-GM1 unit then you wouldn't need a dealer visit.

The factory mounting position for the XM unit is under the carpet above the left rear wheel. If you pull that carpet back you should see the harness.

Not practically, no. There's a company that will solder in a composite video jack, but you have to send your unit to them. Then you have to install an outboard DVD player. Take that inconvenience and add in the fact that the screen resolution is very low and DVD's will look like crap and to my mind it's not even close to worth it.

Absolutely not.

All of these are workarounds... my opinion, if you really want features like DVD playback, custom screens, Bluetooth, GOOD iPod control, etc then remove the factory unit and put it on a shelf in case you want to take the car back to stock some day. Install an aftermarket head that will give you those features.

wow, thanks for the info. I think i might try the Sirius route, i have sirius in my work truck and i love it. Gotta love the Maxim radio.

thanks for the info, i am going to stick with the stock head unit, it seems to work just well and i don't really need those other features.

Tell you one thing though, my next work truck will be getting the kenwood 7100.
