Default Sound Experts Please Comment on Speaker Mounting Question

I have an 04 vert and the rear speakers I am going to use require a 1/4" spacer so the magnet won't hit the body panel behind it. Since this spacer is not available I will have to make it myself or have it made. I have found a 1/4" nylon bushing that fits the #8 speaker mounting screw perfectly. These would be the easiest to use by placing them on the screw behind the speaker plate and in front of the rear panel I am mounting to. However, this would leave a 1/4" gap in between the speaker back and the car's panel. Will this gap create a recognizable audio difference in the rear spekaers? It seems to me there are so many other openings and areas for sound to escape it may not be noticeable. What are your thoughts?

The openings closest to the speaker are the ones to worry about. Depending on the size of the opening, they result in certain frequency cancellations and reduced bass / midbass output, sometimes completely. Front and rear areas of the speaker have to be separated as much as possible.

So with that said I'm thinking your recommendation would be go with a solid ring type spacer as opposed to the individual screw spacers?

yes, this is essential.

but you wont get any midbass out of the rear locations anyway, because they are such poor enclosures.

i agree, you really need a spacer for this, basically what the other guys said. some 1/4 mdf and a rotozip or jigsaw make easy work of this

Thanks for all the confirmations. That makes sense to me and I've got all the necessary parts and tools in the garage to do it that way so off I go. Thanks for chiming in.

You'll only need to do this on the drivers side. This is because the gas tank filling nozzle is in the way. For my SPX 177r comps, I ended up using a 3/4" MDF spacer. I probably could have used a 1/2 but i didn't have any around the shop. IMO, you'd be better using a home-built speaker ring of MDF. Most speakers are designed to run best using the area behind it as some kind of a box.

this is the speaker installed, it doesn't show the spacer too well, but it works.
