I got my 80 Vette and it had an Alpine CD player and only the stock front speakers in it. Last week I went and had some decent 4 way speakers installed in the back and it still sounds like crap ? Any suggestions ? Distorts when you turn it up, not a good tone at all. What should I do ? Disconnect the stock front speakers and maybe install a 10" or 12" in the rear as well ? Equilizer ??
You will probably want to install a new set of front speakers and a power amp to drive them.
A head unit can only put out so much power... and in a light car with very little sound deadening, we need all the power we can get to overcome the road noise.
You might consider a 4-channel amp if you are going to add a sub.
Add an amp even though it is distorting already ? And what about the tone ? Add an EQ ???
Yes. It is distorting because the internal amplifier in the head unit is reaching it's maximum output and clipping the signal to your speakers. I doubt you are reaching the physical limits of the speakers with just HU power.
If you want to change the tone, that's a different story. You can add an EQ if you want, but unless it's a cheap 'power-booster' style, you are going to have to install an additional amplifier.
If you decide to go that route, you can get a remote mounted EQ that tucks away and has all kinds of adjustments... including a crossover to prevent low signals from reaching the main speakers and sending them to the sub.
