There was an article in 4.24.08 USA Today/ business section, that some Headunit makers were starting to make their radios without the CD in favor of the iPods and other MP3 players, thumb drives or other USB devices or SD memory cards.
I was just wondering what you all think?
You think the CD will go the way of the cassette?
Oh yea, if someone could provide a "link" to the USA article would be nice...

It seems a logical progression. Why bother with the cost and mechanical problems of a CD drive when solid state is getting cheaper all the time? All it would take to eliminate CD is someone like Apple to come out with an interface standard. Standardize the plug (or just use USB) and the transfer protocol and in 5 years people would think of CDs the same way they think of 8-tracks. Can you imagine the RIAA getting it through their thick skulls that selling preloaded thumb drives might be profitable?
Old news. The Alpine was released a year ago now. I looked at it when I was shopping but decided it was too much $$$ for what it had.
I usually use USB drives. I haven't bothered with an IPOD because I would not use it much outside of the car and the USB drives are so cheap. I paid $17 for 4 gig ones a few months ago and they'll be below that soon.
My new one (Clarion DUZ385sat) has a cd, but why use it
The new head unit I just installed has a cd but there is really no need for it. The unit has a usb input that will read an IPOD with full control or run a thumb drive. The unit also has a mini stereo input on the front that would run anything else.
I'm looking to upgrade the factory unit. I'm considering going disc-less. I have all my CDs ripped to a hard drive, so I can use USB or some other format. I don't see the CD lasting much longer.

I don't like the size and fragility of CD's but people forget that they use a superior compression type to MP3's. I don't know about most people but I can hear the difference. Why 'upgrade' to a lesser sound quality.
