Default Dayton RSS265HF-4 Tests

I had the opportunity today to test a couple samples of the Dayton RSS265HF-4 10” Sub. It’s a well-regarded and popular model sold by Parts Express for about $126. These drivers are made in Taiwan and the parts appear to be common to several other drivers I’ve seen. The suspensions were loosened up over about 18 hours with a 20 Hz test signal at nearly full-excursion. After that, both drivers were tested using SoundEasy and parameters were extracted.

Dayton claims the following specs: Fs=22, Qes=0.45, Qms=2.8, Qts=0.39, Vas=60 liters, Le=0.95, Re=3.3, and SPL=87 (2.83v/1m).

Sample A:

Sample B:

For a Qtc of 0.7, specs call for a box 0.95 ft^3. The samples call for 1.64 feet^3 and 1.7 feet apiece.

For a Qtc of 1.0, specs call for a box 0.38 ft^3. The samples call for 0.51 feet^3 and 0.51 feet apiece.

While the specs are consistent across the samples, they aren’t very close to the manufacturer’s specs. As is typical with high-xmax drivers, the sensitivity is quite low. For what it’s worth, these drivers are well-constructed and will perform very well once you know the actual parameters, but the published data isn’t very close to reality here.
