Default Which of these two head units would you buy????

Here are the two I am looking at....

Clarion VRX775VD:
http://www.clarion.com/us/en/product...294998349.html

Pioneer AVH-P4900DVD:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...P4900DVD?tab=A

My criteria for selecting these two units was:
- Under $600 price range
- DVD playback in a single DIN unit
- 3 pre-outs for my 3 amps...front, rear, and sub

Associated equipment will be:

(2) JL Audio 300/4 amps running in bridged mode
(1) JL Audio 500/1 amp for sub

JL Audio ZR650-CSi (front component speakers)
JL Audio ??? most likely XR650CXi (rear speakers)
JL Audio Stealthbox w/ 10w3v2

I know that some don't like rear speakers, but I do, so I am going to require a head unit with 3 pre-outs, not 2.

If you would like to suggest an alternate head unit, PLEASE make sure it meets all 3 of my criteria....

And if anyone knows of a good installer for all this stuff in the Baltimore / York county PA area let me know....

Clarion has always been lower end stuff. Pioneer, while not top-of-the-line, is significantly better IMHO

I think I've also decided to stick with a single DIN...don't want to have to go thru the hassle and expense of modifications required.

I was thinking the same way and for the same reasons... AT FIRST

But I got to thinking about a few things, not the least of which is the more mechanics, the more chance for failure. That and I believe a 2D unit would look much better than a single DIN with a flip up screen would when the installation was complete. More "factory" as it were

My 2 cents.

This was my major worry as well, and quite frankly, if it was a daily driver there is NO way I would put in a flip up unit for just that reason. I figure that I can get away with it just cause the car is only going to be driven a few days per week.

I'm going to take a bit of a chance this time and go with a flip out, but when it comes time to replace it, I'll probably go with the double din. I'm also spending money again like a drunken sailor, and need to trim my costs where I can.... Next replacement down the road will be with a high end unit.

Can someone explain to me the pre-outs? Why would someone need 3 as opposed to 2? Is that so you can hook up more, or dedicated, amps? I'm looking for a new HU but I don't need anything fancy and don't plan getting a REAL serious setup. I just want it to be able to hook up to my 1 amp.

3 give u a front, rear, and dedicated sub

with 2 u get a front adn then a rear or a sub

you coudl still hook up 3 amps or a 4 channel and a 2 channel but with less control

for a not crazy setup u will be fine with 2 preouts

Wow, someone has a boner for JL eh?

I'd go with Pioneer all day long over Clarion.
