I'm helping a friend with a C4 (1990). It's a Bose system (which will be completely removed) & he's interested in a passive X-over system. I'm looking at:
Pioneer DEH P880PRS HU
Focal 165KP for the fronts
No rear fill.
Considering (2) JL8W1V2-4 subs in place of the rears
Audison SRX4 amp to power all the above (70wx4)
Any thoughts?
Also having trouble sourcing adapter plates in order to mount the 6.5" in the door.
I'v contacted Vrumvrum to see if he still makes C4 HU mounts...
Comments/thoughts/opinions much appreciated!

I bought my HU mount plate from installer.com Great guys, and helped a lot with my other stuff also. It's $15.
For the 6.5" door speakers, in the next few days I'm delving into redoing my entire '96 system, including putting 6.5" components in the front. I'm just going to remove the stock speaker boxes and fabricate a 1/2" MDF box the same size that's built to house the 6.5" woofer and tweeter, as well as enough room for the crossover. Obviously, the carpeting will still fit over it, so complete stealth install.
I'm going with 6.5" speakers in the rear also, to maintain rear fill, but I've heard that your method will work well also. You'd probably just have to make either a new panel or new box out of MDF to mount them in. It's really not that bad; I've built 3 or 4 MDF subwoofer boxes, so how hard can a tiny speaker one be?

I think your system choices are fine, my only worry is that your amp will make enough power for your subs. What is the power rating on the JL subs? Are they 2 Ohm or 4 Ohm?
VrumVrum (Mike) only makes the face plates now. You will need an after market mount kit for the HU.
Thanks for the info/comments, guys. I wondered about that too. The ampis 70w per channel. The JL subs are rated at 35-150w (at 4 ohms)...I could bridge two channels and feed that to just one 8"...My friend doesn't need earthshaking bass, he's looking for SQ...
If I were you, I would get a 2-channel amp for the front speakers, rated at whatever their RMS is (70 sounds fine). The subs, however, should be fed more power than that. I would connect them in parallel (I think that's the one) so that they appear to be a single subwoofer, and drive them with a single-channel 300w RMS amp. Also, if they're 4-ohm each, this will result in the amp seeing a 2-ohm load, which will give you more apparent power. So if you're doing it this way, make sure the amp is rated for 300w RMS at 2-ohms, not 4. Here's a diagram on how to wire in parallel.
I'm not sure about your 1990, but I think even just under the passenger storage bin in my '96 there would be enough room for 2 of the Alpine PDX amps (I have one). They are super tiny!
Before you buy one, look up the dimensions and make a little cardboard box the same dimensions as the amp, then go see where it will/won't fit.
