'85 Replacement 6 X 9 Question
I am told that the rears have a 2.5" depth. All of the 6 x 9's I saw are a 3" depth with a MUCH larger magnet.
How do I get this to fit and look professional?

Installation Details for your 1985 Corvette
» Use the factory speaker brackets.
» Use the factory speaker grilles.
» Re-drill the mounting screw holes.
» A wiring harness is not available. Cut off the factory connectors and splice the vehicle's speaker wires to your new speaker wires.
» Bose radios are incompatible with aftermarket speakers. You can't replace one of the factory Bose speakers without replacing the rest of the Bose system.
I clicked on some Infinity Speakers that they say will fit without any problem. The top mount mounting depth is 3 3/16" inch so i'm thinking anything less than 4" will fit without an issue.
I'll probably run new speaker wires. I was told that factory wires are pretty lousy.
When I took the rear speaker grill off, it looked like the wheel well and a frame piece would interfere. Maybe I should take a 6 x 9 and mock fit it to make sure. I don't want to buy the system and get it part way done to find out that the rears won't go.
I have also seen what some folks do to install the fronts. They take the whole door panel off and rebuild it. I was hoping to avoid that, if possible.
I should snoop Crutchfield's site and call a couple local pro installers. I'll prolly pay someone to install it so I know it's right.
Run all new wire FYI
I have an appointment with an installer tomorrow to look over things. Over the phone, he mentioned some sheet metal part inside that tends to be a problem and that a spacer could be made of HDPE or plywood. We'll see what we see in the morning. I will post any and all updates for future C4 owners' searches.
6 x 9 x 3" depth fit like a glove. No mods. Just remove the Bose sub enclosure. Infinity
Opted for a 4" door speaker to avoid a build out. Infinity
Nice Pioneer CD/MP3 player with Blue Tooth, HD ready, Sat ready, etc. Great sound. Only irk is the depth. It protrudes a bit far and I am concerned that shifting open palm might bump a control. We'll see.
I'll be installing the antenna bypass switch soon. I will also run the USB cable to the cup holders, since they are only deep enough for a cell phone, iPod, or 2-way radio anyhow. I might find a new home for the Bluetooth mic. It bothers me to see it eclipse the windshield even a little.
